PANOS stands for a complete range of modular downlights that
combines exquisite, consistent design with a high level of practical
functionality. The selection of models, components and light sources available
opens up a remarkable level of flexibility to designers and architects – no
matter what the size of the project or the type of lighting task. Thanks to
numerous innovative details, installation times and costs can be cut.
Energy-saving technologies and recyclable materials with a long service life help
to use resources responsibly and save money. In addition, the design of PANOS
follows the vision of the designers that good lighting creates metaphors and
sets the stage for the comedy of life. Accordingly, the accents set by PANOS in
the living space of human beings have widely varied effects.

Design
PANOS
design | Sottsass Associati Today's architectural style is characterised by
reduction to basic geometrical shapes. Proportions, shapes and materials are in
the foreground, merging to form a perfect whole. This was the initial situation
for developing the square PANOS Q downlight. Not only its outward appearance,
but also the details inside follow straight-line principles. Even the one-piece
cubic reflector unit is square in design. The frameless version of PANOS Q is
particularly restrained, combining light and space to form a minimalist entity.
The
most recent member of the PANOS range provides impressive evidence of what is
made possible by innovative LED technology today. The luminaire's
characteristic appearance in itself is an indication of a number of exceptional
qualities: its high energy efficiency and especially long maintenance intervals
ensure cost benefits and are gentle on the environment. The IR/UV-free light
provided by PANOS LED luminaires also allows to illuminate sensitive areas in
museums or shops, where the focus is on protecting the objects displayed to
maximum extent. Depending on the application, there is a choice of two basic
versions: PANOS Pure White is available in two colour temperatures and lumen
packages, while PANOS BioMotion with RGB light, for instance, allows precise
simulation of the natural course of daylight. The diameter of all LED models is
150 mm.

The high illuminance levels of PANOS LED Pure White luminaires match the brightness levels of compact fluorescent lamps. The 1100 lm luminaire corresponds to the brightness level of a 26 W fluorescent lamp, while the 2000 lm version corresponds to that of two 26 W fluorescent lamps or one 32 W fluorescent lamp. In addition, the luminaires boast a good Ra colour rendering index of 80 as well as dimmability. The high luminous flux levels also require effective thermal management. The 2000 lm PANOS LED luminaire therefore features a special cooling system ensuring many years of failure-free operation. Thanks to glare limitation levels of UGR < 19, this downlight is suitable for VDTs, just like PANOS LED Biomotion.

Simulating
the perfect model provided by Mother Nature, PANOS BioMotion can be
synchronised with the human biological clock, ensuring enhanced well-being and
performance. In addition to simulation of the course of daylight across the
colour temperature spectrum, any RGB lighting scenario with dynamic colours can
be created via the EMOTION touch panel. Thus, it is possible to create
stimulating lighting scenes, especially in rooms independent of daylight. Based
on RGB technology, supplemented by white LEDs, colour temperatures of 2700 K to
6500 K are achieved, at a Ra colour rendering index of 80.

High
luminous flux levels create heat also in LED lighting systems. Hence, effective
cooling of the LED board is an essential factor for durability. Therefore,
Zumtobel uses “SynJetTM” for PANOS LED, an active cooling system that reduces
the surface temperature by up to 30°C. A pulsing membrane produces air swirls,
reliably dissipating hot air from the LED housing via cooling ribs. At less
than 25 dB, the sound produced is negligible – it is equivalent to the sound of
breathing heard from one metre's distance.

You might even say that these downlights have already become
classics in their own right, since PANOS L (Low) and H (High), with diameters
of 175 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm, combine all the features required to ensure
perfect lighting quality at the workplace.
In the latest models, the light output ratio could be
considerably improved thanks to a new surface coating. The anti-glare qualities
of both models are in line with the specifications of the EN 12464 standard.
Thus, design and function merge to form a superior whole. This is all the more
applicable as the modular design of PANOS, with its many possibilities for
different combinations, provides lighting designers with everything they need
for creating application-specific lighting scenarios.

High precision in detail The
superior technical lighting features of the PANOS L and H reflector optics are
based on the extraordinarily high precision of the components made of
high-grade injection-moulded polycarbonate. For coating its – faceted, smooth
and wallwasher – reflectors, Zumtobel uses the so-called sputtering method. To
this end, the plastic is sputtered with aluminium at high vacuum; an ultra-thin
yet extremely hard protective layer is then applied. Compared to the
conventional vaporising or metallising of surfaces with aluminium, sputtering
ensures a significantly higher quality of the layer and a remarkable
improvement of edge coverage. This unique metallisation process sets new
standards in the market. Other benefits include non-iridescence and easy
cleaning using a cleaning cloth (see accessories).

Trend-setting and unobtrusive
The successful
combination of design and technology is evident also in the PANOS M (Metal)
sub-range, to which two new members have been added: PANOS M-V and PANOS M-D.
The use of heat-resistant metal reflectors considerably extends the fitting
options and, hence, the range of applications for PANOS. For ceiling cut-outs
of 100, 150, 200 and 250 mm, PANOS M can be fitted with a variety of lamps
ranging from LV and HV halogen lamps and compact fluorescent lamps through to
high-intensity discharge lamps. PANOS M-WW is a powerful wallwasher rounding
out the versatile application of PANOS M. The use of specific technical
lighting accessories, such as IR/UV filters, makes PANOS M the ideal choice for
highly demanding lighting solutions, e.g. in shops or supermarkets.

Two
members of the range, PANOS M-L (Metal Low) and M-H (Metal High), which are
optionally available with matt or smooth reflector finish, can be fitted with
TC lamps ranging from 18 W to 57 W. Operation with TC-TELI amalgam lamps, which
are characterised by their constantly high luminous flux, is also possible. A
sophisticated ventilation system allows not only light-tight installation in
ceilings, but also operation in a closed IP 54 version. As an innovative
highlight, the metal reflectors of PANOS M HG/LG are provided with a sputtered
finish. This results in an iridescence-free darklight effect as well as an
increase in light output ratio.

PANOS S (swivelling) leads the way in many ways. The direction of light can be easily adjusted both vertically and horizontally. Moreover, a wide range of advanced light sources available leaves nothing to be desired – no matter whether PANOS S is used as a spot or flood. The unique flip-out tab on the surround ensures that PANOS S can be positioned easily. The downlight is as flexible to handle as its sizes are varied (available with diameters of 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm and up to 250 mm).

Small but effective flip-out tab The housing of PANOS S is extremely flexible and particularly convenient to use thanks to its integral flip-out tab. Just flip out the tab and move the housing into the required position. The large tab handle ensures maximum user convenience. Then simply flip the tab in again, and it disappears from sight into the luminaire. The PANOS S housing can be adjusted while the downlight is in use without any problem because the flip-out tab never heats up. The direction of light can be modified in any way at any time. No need for any tools, installation effort or help from anyone else.

distribution.
B The separate adjustability of the lighting
head and housing is absolutely unique for this downlight. This allows for
selective shading of specific areas and also prevents people looking directly
into the lamp from the side.
C For illuminating different levels of shelving
or retail islands in a shop, PANOS S can be swivelled into the ceiling by up to
45º. The lighting head remains inconspicuous in the ceiling, which results in a
very uncluttered look.

Creative freedom for straight-line architecture
The logical consequence of straight-line thinking – this describes the idea behind the square PANOS Q luminaire in simple terms. Inspired by the geometrically reduced formal language of today, PANOS Q (available in sizes 190 x 190 mm and 250 x 250 mm) consistently continues this trend. In addition to compact fluorescent lamps, the luminaire can also be fitted with HIT lamps. Thanks to its one-piece reflector with symmetrical wide-angle distribution and good cut-off angle, PANOS Q can be efficiently used particularly in offices and administrative areas. However, PANOS Q has become firmly established also in shops and other demanding environments – not least because of the variety of design options available involving decorative and technical lighting attachments.
