TASK AREA concepts
The focussing of light

Task Area concepts by Zumtobel open up a new dimension for office lighting: They combine the interior, the luminaire and the lighting management system to form a unity.

TASK AREA concepts
back to overview

In the Task Area, the lighting design is determined by the visual tasks to be performed, providing completely new freedom for both designers and users.  The quantity and quality of light are adjusted precisely in order to provide perfect lighting for modern Task Area-related lighting concepts according to the EN 12464 standard – for more quality, more comfort and optimum energy efficiency.

Work at modern offices is extremely varied – every day, a huge variety of tasks have to be performed.  Communication within and with the team, preparation of documents on the PC, notebook or on paper, support to customers, gathering of information – all these tasks must be performed alternately, placing extremely diverse requirements on the lighting.  The requirements of these modern office worlds are taken into account by future-proof, demand-oriented lighting solutions, at the same time making use of free spaces by increasing users’ well-being and acceptance.  According to the "Task Area concepts", the interior, the luminaire and the lighting management system form a unity so that the lighting solution focuses not only on the Task Area and the specific tasks to be performed there, but also takes account of factors such as comfort, flexibility, economic efficiency and design.

More quality: Task Area concepts focus on specific lighting tasks. Where required, i.e. in the area of the visual task, the right quantity of light of best possible quality is provided – not matched to the interior, but adjusted to primarily suit the requirements of those working in the room.
Optimum energy efficiency: Spacious buildings in particular provide huge potential for optimisation. The stronger the lighting is focused onto the Task Area, the more significantly the mean illuminance levels are reduced and therefore the average energy consumption for the visual Task Areas.
More comfort: The focussing of light provides for freedom in terms of design and economy, in order to make investments in comfort and dynamism.  Providing the right light for specific visual tasks, vertical lighting and accents in the room, the optimum lighting solution enhances the users’ sense of wellbeing.

Yet Task Area concepts do not merely represent a response to current trends in the office area, but do themselves establish trends and innovative ways of implementation.  New systems increase the axial flexibility in the building, easily allowing also for subsequent re-design of offices or even complete floors.  There are as many options as there are requirements, covering everything from single-cell offices through to modular structures.  Zumtobel provides ideal customised luminaire concepts for that purpose:

  • LIGHT FIELDS, fully flexible cluster luminaires, with micro-pyramidal optic (MPO) with all-round glare control.
  • Flexibly positioned free-standing luminaires; their individual lighting provides maximum flexibility for users and at the same time all-round glare control thanks to micro-pyramidal optics (MPO).
  • The Task Area-oriented FREELINE indirect/direct pendant luminaire, which is arranged directly above the workstation, is oriented towards the room axes and provides high operating efficiency while keeping energy consumption low.
  • The LDS ceiling-mounted light sail, which includes not only lighting elements but also audio functions and integrated air-conditioning modules, if required.  A unit installed directly above the working area covers up to three building axes.

Task Area concepts are rounded off to perfection by combining these intelligent luminaire systems with demand-oriented lighting management systems.  In order to remain flexible and be able to change the Task Area as well as the ambient areas, the concepts are supported by DALI, thereby minimising the design and installation effort.  This flexibility is evident throughout the complete life cyle of the installation:  LUXMATE Flexis is a reasonably priced system which enables to combine luminaires that can be positioned as required to form Task Area zones or room areas, without intervening into the installation.  Unlike with conventional DALI lighting control systems, LUXMATE Flexis enables to quickly and flexibly adjust not only dimmable but also exclusively switchable lighting installations to changing requirements or new tenants – and if required, addressable luminaires can easily be made into dimmable luminaires by fitting them with a "dimming on demand" function.
In combination with "Maintenance Control", additional energy savings potential can be utilised.  The age-related decrease in the lighting level is compensated on the basis of time.  The extra energy required for compensation is not consumed from the beginning, as is usually the case, but only when it is actually needed.
