On the one hand, we have the individual with his and her expectations, needs and feelings. As human beings, we need light for orientation, work, and to feel at ease. Like a plant, the individual also seeks light. Yet there is a great difference between light and light: between daylight and artificial light, between a solitary light source and a dynamic lighting composition.
And on the other hand, we have to address the issue of energy. Ever since the environment’s dramatic response to exploitation and pollution, the issue of saving energy has been loaded with social as well as economic significance. Intelligent lighting can contribute highly to saving energy: according to the Internation Energy Agency (IEA), on average 19% of worldwide electricity demand is accounted for by lighting. To provide the best possible quality of light for people, Zumtobel is researching the physical and psychological effects of light and is constantly improving its practical use – and for the first time making it measurable. The Ergonomic Lighting Indicator (ELI ) is setting a new standard in the lighting industry. It quantifies the ergonomic factors of light and juxtaposes these to the energy efficiency ratios. The concept of the balance between human and energy-efficient light harmonises both aspects of light: The human aspects of a lighting solution are described with the 5 ergonomic factors visual performance, vista, visual performance, vitality and empowerment. The ELI-graph quickly identifies the points of attention. |
