Accent lighting improves users' acceptance of a lighting solution

The "Light and people" study carried out by the German Institute for Applied Lighting Technology (DIAL/Deutsches Institut für Angewandte Lichttechnik) analyses the effect of distribution of light in a room on its acceptability to users.

DIAL Light Study

It was possible to produce visual conditions in conformity with minimum values in the standards (e.g. EN 12464) using all types of ambient lighting. The assessment of room brightness was strongly determined by wallwashing. It was possible to improve the attractiveness of the room significantly by means of additional accent lighting. Attributes such as "inviting, lively, friendly and interesting" were mentioned. Ambient lighting alone had hardly any positive influence at all on people's personal mood. Purely direct and purely indirect light were negatively rated. Accent lighting on wall surfaces produced a direct improvement in people's personal sense of wellbeing and activity.

Consequences for lighting design:
. Accent lighting obviously plays a major role when it comes to sense of wellbeing. However, there is no all-round optimum lighting solution which caters equally for all the disparate requirements placed on lighting in terms of visual performance, impression of space and sense of wellbeing.
. Consequently, lighting design must make allowance for the various ways in which an interior is used in order to be able to adapt lighting so that it is fit for purpose and appropriate to needs.
. Spatially differentiated lighting using several lighting components and appropriate control offer huge potential for improving working and living conditions.
