The lighting solution from Zumtobel simultaneously showcases the architecture and meets the various requirements associated with an art and concert venue. A customised LED lighting solution was designed for the various different rooms and spaces to make sure that the lighting concept was fully in line with this approach.
Special luminaire for a customised LED lighting solution
A unique new luminaire was developed specifically for the art gallery. Bright warm white LED light lines traversed by a cold white light shaft in the floor and ceiling underline the effect of the 9-metre-high room and perfectly capture the essence of its material character. The VIVO LED spotlight system demonstrates its flexibility by delivering direct illumination in the art gallery and other rooms. The precise and uniform light distribution and excellent colour rendering are ideal for highlighting particular works of art and creating the right lighting effects for concerts and events. While more functional luminaires provide orientation and a pleasant ambience in the entrance and hallways, the SCONFINE decorative pendant designed by Matteo Thun plays with the effects of form, light and space in the bar area.

For Georg von Opel, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss corporation Hansa AG, "Corporate Social Responsibility" is one of the most important issues, if not the most decisive factor, for the future competitiveness of companies. Experience shows that a pleasant environment improves the motivation, efficiency and health of employees. As a result, from the very beginning, Georg von Opel wanted to build much more than simply an aesthetically pleasing high-rise building. His mission was to oversee a project that genuinely meets modern requirements for sustainability and quality of life in the workplace.
This approach has seen the project, which has already been pre-certified with a silver award from the German Sustainable Building Council (Deutsche Gesellschaft für nachhaltiges Bauen, or DGNB), take on a pioneering role in a host of key areas. Traditional priorities such as functionality and task-oriented spaces now share equal weighting with new aspects like optimised working environments and the associated wellbeing of people who use the building. The lighting concept, incorporating a complete LED solution from Zumtobel, and the comprehensive range of services on offer, including childcare and a fitness centre, make a significant contribution to the achievement of these objectives.
Built by Immo Hansa Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, this office complex meets the highest standards of architecture, design and quality. Just like the Bishop Saint Martin of Tours, from whom the building takes its name, the building is divisible, straightforward and open. The shape of the tower was driven by a fundamental desire to achieve maximum exposure to light and the best possible efficiency. The minimised core of the structure and the resulting lean segmentation ensure optimised office depths and long window clusters. This in turn means that the elegant and vertically oriented light metal facade, housing 18 office floors with a total of 17,740-square-metres of rentable space, contains a large number of workplaces close to a window. Each floor is largely devoid of supporting pillars and offers an area of almost 1000-square-metres that can be divided up into three separate units. Opal light channels embedded in the walls with integrated intercom facilities give the elevator lobbies a distinct air of elegance and PANOS infinity LED downlights help spread a pleasant lighting atmosphere throughout the hallways.
A variety of office layouts are possible. Classic individual offices offer scope for creative freedom and the utmost privacy, whilst open-plan offices encourage team-oriented cooperation and can be supplemented by designated quiet zones to promote communication and recreation. Young companies should be especially attracted to the creative office environment, where efficient working practices and productivity are combined with fun, recreation and spontaneity.
However, this kind of flexible interior design naturally places high demands on the lighting solution, which was developed by the architects msm meyer schmitz-morkramer in cooperation with Zumtobel. The SEQUENCE LED luminaire gives users the opportunity to appreciate both ergonomic glare-free direct light on the workplace and indirect light on the ceiling, creating a pleasant all-round atmosphere. The refined appearance of SEQUENCE on the silver mounting rail also adds an attractive aesthetic element, which is further enhanced by cool light with a colour temperature of 4000 K. This additional design aspect further complements the sophisticated character of the interior.
The customised SEQUENCE track, from which three or five of the slim 25mm-flat LED modules are installed on the suspended mounting rail, also guarantees the necessary flexibility required for new tenants or future redevelopment. The energy efficiency achieved during use is equally important. This task is expertly handled by the LUXMATE LITENET lighting management system, linked to discrete presence detectors in the mounting rail and a daylight sensor on the roof of the building. The amount of artificial light required is directly dependent on how much daylight is available, so that when people are present in an office, exactly the right light level is achieved for every visual task. In addition, to minimise the input of heat, blinds are adjusted automatically according to the position of the sun. Despite an array of automated features, employees can still individually adapt the lighting situation to reflect their personal needs. For this purpose, in line with the concept of maximum flexibility, wireless EnOcean switches can be mounted anywhere in the application.
The exquisite lighting solution is not just all about the interior – it also adds a welcoming level of visibility to the building when the sun goes down. The SEQUENCE track has been installed on all floors of the tower, as well as in the 7-storey core of the development with 7,536-square-metres of rentable space. The clever use of proportion, materials and a vertically oriented facade unite the different parts of the building during the day, whilst at night the lighting solution creates a harmonious and engaging blend between the tower and the wide U-shaped core.
The generously proportioned external plaza, intended as a central location for communication and exchanges, has an internal equivalent in the form of the foyer. Spanning two storeys with a marbled dark grey natural stone floor, this imposing area is illuminated by a series of PANOS infinity LED downlights. Step inside and the eye is inevitably drawn to a mosaic of the austere monk St Martin, the namesake of the project, which is beautifully showcased with DIAMO wallwashers. The reception desk, where DIAMO LED downlights also feature, is more than just about controlling access. It is designed to be an initial contact point for all kinds of interaction, such as where tenants and even external parties can reserve one of the eleven conference and meeting rooms. Windows stretching from floor to ceiling flood the interior with daylight, generating a bright and friendly impression. The elegant decor and furnishings, together with the latest media technology, combine to offer a sophisticated infrastructure for seminars and events - from one-on-one meetings to large gatherings with up to 70 people. The atmosphere in the conference rooms is perfectly enhanced by the lighting solution. A black light channel forms an elegant contrast to the parallel silver-coloured louver ceiling. CARDAN LED recessed luminaires, mounted at specified intervals, can be swivelled though 30 degrees. Only the light makes a statement, thanks to the unobtrusive design language of the fitting itself, and the warm 3000 K colour temperature nicely complements the wood of the wall panels and tables, as well as the leather chairs. As with the blinds, the CARDAN LED fittings are controlled using the LUXMATE LITENET lighting management system. Optimised lighting scenes for events such as presentations, meeting or celebrations are pre-programmed and can be intuitively selected using the media controls.
The foyer leads onto a modern 600-square-metre gastro-experience world with integrated coffee bar. The attractive contemporary interior, characterised by a clear design awash with warm tones of grey and brown and dashes of bright turquoise, looks more like a modern hotel lounge than a traditional staff canteen. In line with the rest of the building, employees and visitors are welcomed during the day by an open and light-filled atmosphere. In the darker hours, special versions of the multi-functional SUPERSYSTEM LED lighting tool add to the ambience with its unique charm, in combination with LED spotlights in the black lacquered profiles that have been installed between the perforated aluminium fins of the ceiling structure. Once again, the brilliant lighting effect takes centre stage and the subtle lines of the SUPERSYSTEM product itself remain very much out of shot.
The lighting concept designed by architects msm meyer of schmitz-morkramer with Zumtobel is the foundation of the whole St Martin Tower complex. Close collaboration between the likes of K. Dörflinger Gesellschaft für Elektroplanung mbH & Co. KG from Allendorf (electrical engineering) and EGT Gebäudetechnik GmbH from Triberg (building technology) enabled efficient and effective realisation of the initial plans. Offices, childcare facilities, a fitness centre, ancillary rooms and an underground car park - many aspects united by one impressive lighting solution using LED luminaires from Zumtobel.

SUPERSYSTEM outdoor is based on the versatile interior lighting system of the same name, and is highly flexible thanks to its minimalist design language and ultra-compatible modular system allowing to assemble the individual modules as required. This flexibility allows to provide outdoor illumination creating an individual appearance. In addition to a variety of columns and fixing options for illuminating roads, squares, façades and trees, the system boasts extremely flexible luminaire heads. The luminaires can be configured with 6 to 34 LED tubes featuring the most diverse beam patterns. Each LED tube can be aligned with high precision towards the object to be illuminated. Thus, depending on the object and distance to be covered, narrow-beam, wide-angle or asymmetrical light distribution can be provided. This allows emission of light in a considerably more precise and targeted way than is possible with other outdoor luminaires, and to precisely adjust it to the lighting tasks at hand. Thus, SUPERSYSTEM outdoor is able not only to illuminate horizontal roads, squares or paths, but also to brighten up vertical areas uniformly. Thanks to the varied angles of the individual LED tubes, glare produced by the luminaire is also extremely reduced. Colour perception is ensured as well thanks to a good colour rendering index. In addition, luminaire versions with a colour temperature of 3000 K and 4000 K are ideal for presenting both a city's historic centre and a modern skyline in the right light. Instead of installing the luminaire heads on the columns, they can also be installed on the façades, thus not only providing for uniformity of appearance but also for spectacular illumination of hotel façades.
SUPERSYSTEM outdoor has been developed out of the lighting solution designed for the new town lighting of the tourist resort of Lech am Arlberg in Austria. Dieter Bartenbach has developed an LED lighting concept for the ski resort aiming at flexible illumination of vertical and horizontal room structures, which not only allows proper ambient lighting but also makes spatial depths perceptible, simultaneously reducing the number of luminaires and energy consumption to a minimum. The concept was implemented by Dieter Bartenbach in collaboration with Zumtobel. The lighting experts came up with a special luminaire especially manufactured for this purpose, whose luminance is divided among several LED tubes with varying beam patterns, ensuring that passers-by are barely distracted by glare. Another benefit is the system's modular design: the luminaires can be configured with 6 to 34 LED tubes, each with approx. 2 W. Thus, the lighting situation can be adjusted as required. Depending on the location, Zumtobel has also developed various versions to be installed on columns and façades as well as for illumination of the river Lech. Thus, one single luminaire range is able to perform nearly all outdoor lighting tasks in the town of Lech.

As a wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted and pendant luminaire, CAELA appears extremely slim and elegant, with a maximum depth of 55 mm. The pared-down stylistic idiom is emphasised by the diffuse cover. CAELA is available as a round or square luminaire with a diameter or side length of 330 mm and 430 mm and in the colours white, matt silver, copper, brass, matt grey and black. In these versions, CAELA serves to decorate corridors and entrance areas in administration buildings as well as restaurants, offices and private domestic areas. The luminaire's modular design is continued in the choice of switchable and dimmable models, with a luminous flux of 1000 and 1500 lm, as well as its light distribution: in addition to symmetrical standard light distribution, the square version of the wall-mounted luminaire also features innovative asymmetrical light distribution specifically geared to meet the lighting requirements in corridors and staircases. The light is precisely directed onto the floor, thus avoiding spill light towards the ceiling while the floors and walls are lit uniformly.
For additional energy efficiency, the CAELA LED luminaire can easily be integrated into a lighting management system. Emergency lighting can be implemented with this luminaire in the same manner. Therefore, CAELA is more than a decorative highlight; it also meets the highest demands on integral lighting solutions: it can be intelligently and individually adjusted to various lighting tasks, boasts maximum efficiency, and gives architects and lighting designers creative scope corresponding to the zeitgeist.

Light is naturally an important design element in the showrooms, particularly when it comes to supporting presentation concepts and accurately displaying colours and materials. The lighting solution provided by Zumtobel fulfils all of these functions and simultaneously meets the corporate identity guidelines stipulated by Porsche. VIVO spotlights provide brilliant pinpoint light that picks out the fine details of the cars. The excellent colour rendering of the VIVO range helps enhance the natural appearance of the different surfaces and materials. The silver finish of the iF award-winning luminaire merges perfectly with the ceiling of the showroom and in no way distracts from the interior architecture or the luxurious cars.
A pleasantly illuminated lounge or waiting area fosters positive feelings and can make waiting times feel shorter. The excellent lighting quality of PANOS infinity enables reading and creates a congenial atmosphere for open communication. These factors generate a positive feeling and can help sales discussions get off to a good start. The reception area often shapes the first impressions of a company. This is where potential customers are first welcomed to the showroom, so appropriate lighting can clearly play a vital role. In addition, service personnel require functional task lighting to work efficiently and effectively. PANOS infinity meets all of these requirements with the highest lighting quality delivered by the latest LED technology. The downlight also creates a special effect in the ceiling, as the discrete mounting of the light source in no way detracts from the visual impact of the light itself.
In the course of day-to-day work in office applications, it is quite normal to encounter a huge variety of different visual stimuli. This means that achieving the right lighting concept is crucial. The office study conducted by Zumtobel with Frauenhofer IAO found that people clearly prefer different light levels and colour temperatures. The research also demonstrated that direct/indirect lighting and individual controls are important for many office users. The Porsche offices located within the showroom area take all of these factors into account with one single luminaire. Zumtobel. The Light.
An independent study from REFA Consulting has proved that the commissioning of a lighting management system with LITECOM is significantly faster than with a comparable KNX system. The research showed potential time savings of up to 74 percent.
Which system offers the best possible support for the operator, the installer and the end-user?
REFA Consulting GmbH, part of the REFA Association for work research, business organisation and corporate development, set about answering this question by comparing a KNX system with the LITECOM lighting management system. The analysis of individual steps and the time required for these revealed valuable information about the extent to which these systems deliver on their promises of simplicity and security.
The research focused on a simulated office space with two continuous light bands made up of three DALI luminaires. One light band was situated near the window and the other was mounted further back in the room, with a blind to help create various different lighting scenarios. The results of this research were unequivocal:
The LITECOM lighting management system puts the focus firmly on the user in every respect. During the extensive product development process, maximum visual comfort and the individual adaptability of the lighting solution were just as important as an intuitive user interface for installa-tion, configuration, commissioning and operation.
The core of the LITECOM system is the compact controller, which is designed with three DALI lines that each has capacity for 64 DALI devices. The LM-Bus also offers the possibility to connect up to 250 devices and actuators. In addition to daylight, time or absence-dependent control standards, a unique LITECOM app concept gives users the chance to manage tunableWhite applications or highly innovative solutions involving luminaires such as SEQUENCE. Blinds or control points can be integrated via the LM-BUS and a TCP/IP interface is also available. This enables monitoring and operation using smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs, traditional switches or Zumtobel control points.

The entries required to perform a calculation have been reduced to a minimum, so that up to three lighting solutions can be compared on site in just a few steps. Zumtobel. The light.
In collaboration with Lécharny & Bertrand and the electrical design engineer Jan Muyshondt Zumtobel developed a custom lighting concept which enhances the clear lines and the powerfully modelled surfaces of the cars, thus creating an exciting interplay of light and shadows. For this purpose, Zumtobel used the modular INTRO lighting system which combines a variety of luminaire types based on cutting-edge LED technology. The LED accent spotlights used in Puurs can be rotated through 360° and swivelled in and out, thus enabling staging and pinpoint lighting in the car dealership. Furthermore, system output, colour temperature and light distribution of the spotlights can be combined individually, granting BMW Gregoir maximum flexibility. Another advantage is the convenient installation of the modular lighting system. In the event of repurposing specific areas, for instance, lighting inserts can also be de-installed at any time, and re-installed at a later date, without the use of any tools. In order to be able to combine both spotlights and diffuse light lines in one single lighting channel, Zumtobel made use of the flexible lighting system even before it was launched on the market.
In the context of a project headed by Hans Lambrechts, the luminaire manufacturer developed an individual custom solution for BMW Gregoir which combines two innovative LED luminaire systems, INTRO and SLOTLIGHT: along a length of 135 metres, the installation frame recessed into the ceiling accommodates 200 INTRO accent spots and some 60 custom-made SLOTLIGHT II ceiling-mounted LED luminaires to specifically suit the frame. The diffuse light provided by the light lines ensures a clear profile of the cars' reflective surfaces, whereas targeted spots produce a brilliant light, making details visible and suggesting vehicle movement.
Outside the entrance, Zumtobel installed SLOTLIGHT II LED individual luminaires with IP54 rating ensuring maximum protection from spray water and dust. Inside the entrance area, as well as in the offices and the lobby, 175 recessed LED downlights of the PANOS infinity and PANOS evolution ranges were installed, with additional DIAMO downlights mounted above the reception desk in the lobby. In the section reserved for used cars, some 80 luminaires of the TECTON continuous-row lighting system have been installed along a length of over 200 m and supplemented by LED spotlights of the VIVO range.
For the car delivery section, Zumtobel came up with another highlight: an offset rectangular lighting frame that is 11 m x 5 m in size. This integrated delivery section is defined by right-angled SLOTLIGHT II L connectors supported by high-precision PANOS infinity downlights. In order to provide the right ambience for handing over new cars, Zumtobel programmed a brief light & music show controlled by the LITECOM lighting management system. However, that is not the only special task fulfilled by this intuitive, app-based lighting control system. The system also allows individual control of all luminaires including those of the ONLITE RESCLITE emergency lighting system, which can even be dimmed individually, if required. LITECOM encompasses the entire physical structure of the building and maps all the relevant technical facilities appropriately. Rooms or parts of rooms can be amalgamated to form floor levels or other subdivisions in order to structure all the luminaires, sensors and controls of a building, including their mutual interactions, in a flexible manner.
Shortly after the opening of his car dealership, Hervé Gregoir delivers a positive summary: “For our site in Puurs, Zumtobel developed a lighting design concept that complies with all our requirements. And what's more: the concept is fit for the future and can be modified and extended at any time. For us this means plenty of additional security in terms of investment and up-to-dateness of design. We were able to communicate with all those involved – the architects, the electrical design engineer and Zumtobel – in a highly open and constructive manner at all times. We could not have made a better choice.” Two new projects by BMW Gregoir are proof of this belief: at present, Zumtobel is about to complete the lighting system for the workshop in Puurs, and a redesign of a lighting design concept for another car dealership is already being prepared.
Zumtobel. The Light.
For the different conditions in the two units, Zumtobel has developed an individual lighting concept in collaboration with electrical consultants Bäbler & Pirker from Geneva, that helps to showcase the perfectly modelled sports cars for customers and potential buyers in a sculptural, unadulterated way thanks to an interplay of diffuse and directional light. Ten luminous ceilings with a size of 5 x 2 m, installed above the high-end sports cars on display in the entrance area of the Ferrari and Maserati showrooms, constitute a special feature. The stretch ceilings, each backlit by 44 TECTON Tetris continuous-row luminaires and framed by six swivelling CARDAN 1000 spotlights, were custom-built to meet the requirements of Garage Zénith. The diffuse light of the luminous ceilings ensures a clear profile of the cars' reflective bodies, whereas targeted spots produce a brilliant light, making details visible and emphasising the dynamic contours of the vehicles. The lighting of the Ferrari and Maserati display recesses, all of which were meant to be lit from below or backlit, had to comply with strict specifications. In this case, Zumtobel chose a tailor-made solution with continuous-row luminaires of the TECTON Tetris and LINARIA ranges. The continuous-row lighting systems showcase their impressive luminous power also in the conference and presentation rooms. In the sales offices, Zumtobel has installed SLOTLIGHT II recessed luminaires that ensure pleasantly uniform light distribution thanks to their homogeneously lit lines, making the car purchase an exclusive experience in a personal environment. Downlights of the MICROS range provide atmospheric accent lighting in the lounge of the refurbished original building. To illuminate the high-end new and used cars in the new building, Zumtobel chose continuous-row systems of the TECTON range featuring wide-angle reflectors.
All luminaires can be addressed individually thanks to a KMX/DALI system, and can be dimmed individually to create targeted accent lighting, among other things. Various lighting scenes are already predefined and can be modified as required. For Garage Zénith this results in enormous potential energy savings: using the control system and due to the luminaires being dimmable, the car dealership benefits from a reduction of energy consumption by some 30 per cent. A positive result that also appeals to owner Michel Zuchuat in the long run: “Even after two years, we are still absolutely convinced of the lighting concept that Zumtobel has developed for us. In this context, we not only value the highly superior lighting quality, but also the lower energy costs. In addition, we did not have to replace a single luminaire in two years. An ideal solution and an investment that absolutely pays for itself.”

The Warsaw National Museum is the largest and most important museum in Poland. Its most recent addition, the ARCOS LED spotlight, is a true master when it comes to presenting a wide variety of exhibits to optimum effect. In terms of energy and conservational aspects, ARCOS has achieved iconic status in lighting history. Due to its sophisticated lighting technology, it allows visitors to enjoy art in its most authentic form.
The concept submitted by Zumtobel managed to win a public invitation to tender. The experience and know-how of the Austrian lighting specialist were decisive for the operators of the National Museum. In the sphere of art and culture, Zumtobel develops lighting solutions based on comprehensive studies investigating, among other things, the effects of light on sensitive artworks.
The right light for any exhibit
The ARCOS LED spotlight is a product resulting from this research. Due to its compact size, the high-performance LED module is ideal for accent lighting. Instead of 1100 halogen spotlights with an installed load of 100 W each, today 970 ARCOS spotlights featuring an installed load of 20 W each and 120 spotlights with 25 W each set the lighting stage for some 780,000 paintings and sculptures. One of the most decisive criteria concerned colour rendering, which was supposed to exceed RA 90. ARCOS mastered this requirement with a colour rendering index of RA 94 at a constant luminous flux level, independent of the colour temperature, and considerably lower energy consumption than conventional solutions.
However, in order to ensure a perfectly authentic experience of art, the spotlight has plenty more to offer: due to built-in tunableWhite technology, the light colour can be adjusted to the material, colour and character of each individual artwork. Gold, for instance, shines especially brightly when illuminated by warm white light colours, whereas materials like silver, steel or concrete are given a more favourable appearance by cool white light. With artworks from ancient to modern times on display, the demands in terms of lighting could not be more varied at the National Museum. Thanks to tunableWhite, the colour temperature of each spotlight can be adjusted, either manually at the luminaire unit or via the lighting management system. Moreover, the nearly UV- and IR-free light emitted by LEDs is gentle on the exhibits.
Flexible and with aesthetic appeal
The ARCOS spotlight itself cannot fail to impress thanks to its minimalist and uncluttered design. It was, however, especially important to the operators of the National Museum that the spotlight was also highly flexible and simple to handle in every-day use. Often it is the finest nuances in presentation that decide upon the effect created by an exhibit. Due to its large variety of accessories, ARCOS provides optimum prerequisites for finding a target-oriented solution to any lighting task in just a few simple steps. The built-in front ring painted in black not only serves as a holding ring for attachments, but above all also ensures glare-free lighting. In addition, every spotlight can be rotated through 360° and pivoted through 90°.
The lighting solution of the entire building, based on LEDs in combination with the BUTLER XT lighting management system including presence detectors, has reduced energy consumption at the National Museum already by 40 percent. Three out of five galleries have already been converted to the trend-setting lighting system; the other two will follow this year.
Zumtobel. The Light.
Since its foundation in 1993, the company has evolved into one of the country's largest exporters and highest-grossing companies. The engine and car manufacturer is now one of the most important foreign investors in Hungary and one of the largest employers in the region: in August 2014, Audi Hungaria hired its 11,000th employee. As at 31 December 2014, the company had a staff of 11,274. In total, 1,973,734 engines and 135,232 cars were produced by Audi Hungaria last year. Thus, Audi Hungaria ensures employment of more than 25,000 people, including its service providers and suppliers.
In 2010, when the project planning for extending the premises around Plant 2 started, Zumtobel Budapest directly contacted the decision-makers of Audi Hungaria – who had already gained some experience in collaborating with Zumtobel when the staff lounges of Plant 1 were fitted with a new lighting system – and arranged for preliminary discussions to be held. The requirements specified for a lighting concept of this scope were very exacting: a basic prerequisite was the superior quality of the lighting solution, which was to be provided by a one-stop supplier to ensure that the project would be implemented as efficiently as possible. In particular, Audi demanded an extremely high level of service quality, which required the supplier of the lighting solution to provide support far beyond what is customary. Perfect solutions had to be found for all rooms, and ongoing adjustment of the lighting solution to continuously changing parameters had to be ensured during the entire planning stage. With a view to the vast expanse of the factory premises, maintenance efforts needed to be kept as low as possible. On account of its superior product quality and constructive collaboration in the past, Zumtobel Budapest was able to win over the decision-makers of Audi Hungaria and was awarded the contract for the large-scale project in Győr.
The order placed by Audi Hungaria involved a lighting solution for the entire new factory building complex that included quite varied areas such as the manufacturing hall, the logistics and short-term storage facilities, the body shop, the paint shop, the laboratory, the surface-monitoring section, the canteen with a restaurant and dining rooms, the staff lounges as well as the offices and administrative areas. The project, which started at the end of 2011, was implemented in close collaboration with the German design studios IBB Blomeier from Nuremberg, IB Kaulich & Hofmann from Lappersdorf and Ingenieurbüro Michael Huber from Bergen. Contrary to the clients' wish laid down in the tender documentation that only conventional light sources be used, Jean Mehrmann, Project Manager at Zumtobel Budapest, was able to demonstrate the huge savings potential that could be opened up by the use of LEDs. “We are very pleased that we were able to convince Audi Hungaria to use the LED versions of some of the luminaires. This allows us to cut the factory's energy costs by up to 50 percent. Considering the dimensions of the premises, this contributes considerably to increasing the factory's economic efficiency,” says Jean Mehrmann.
By far the largest share of the order volume is made up by the TECTON continuous-row lighting system, which is able to meet a huge variety of lighting requirements and adjust to the demands of specific visual tasks with more flexibility than any other system. For traditional models fitted with T16 fluorescent lamps as those installed at Audi Hungaria's Plant 2, the system provides a wide range of optics and reflectors as well as escape-sign and emergency luminaires. What all lighting modules have in common is outstanding thermal management and high light output ratios, which lay the foundation for an integral energy-efficient solution. In the assembly bays, approx. 140 kilometres of the TECTON continuous-row lighting system were installed. Ambient lighting in the factory hall is provided by Zumtobel's TECTON luminaires fitted with ST reflectors designed for rooms of up to 10 m in height. In order to ensure perfect illumination of the 18 m high short-term storage facility and the logistics section, TECTON SH reflectors boasting extremely narrow-beam light distribution are used. In highly sensitive rooms such as the laboratory, the TECTON IP50 luminaires installed comply with the prescribed clean-room requirements.
The LED emergency lighting system implemented by Zumtobel is a sophisticated custom solution that allows communication between the existing external emergency lighting system and Zumtobel's emergency luminaires. For this purpose, the ONLITE RESCLITE LED emergency luminaire was elaborately reprogrammed. It is the only emergency luminaire currently available on the market that is suitable for mounting heights between 2.2 m and 20 m, nevertheless requiring only a minimum of energy. In addition, ONLITE ECOSIGN escape-sign luminaires were installed at Audi Hungaria's Plant 2 as well. In total, the volume of emergency and escape-sign luminaires installed in this project marks the largest emergency lighting order in the history of Zumtobel: the number of luminaires installed corresponds to Zumtobel's entire annual production in 2011.
Other Zumtobel luminaires installed within Plant 2 include the 2 x 49 W TECTON laser cabin luminaires featuring IP 50 rating and a special reflector as well as the CLEAN clean-room luminaire for wind tunnel illumination. Both were implemented as custom solutions to meet the special requirements of the new factory building. In the canteen and the restaurant, CARDAN recessed LED luminaires in various colour temperatures were installed. Ambient lighting of the dining rooms is provided by Zumtobel's SCONFINE pendant LED luminaires. The canopies and splash-guard area are illuminated by SCUBA moisture-proof luminaires. LED downlights of the PANOS infinity and CREDOS ranges brighten up the factory's staff lounges. In the offices of Plant 2, LED luminaires of the LIGHT FIELDS range provide perfect task lighting at the workstations.
Since the beginning of the companies' collaboration in 2010, Audi Hungaria has confirmed the positive business relationship by constantly increasing its order volume, with more follow-up projects already in the pipeline. For instance, Audi Hungaria plans a step-by-step upgrade of the entire Plant 1 with LED products by Zumtobel. As a first step of this extensive conversion project, the changing rooms and lounges of Plant 1 are presently being fitted with LED downlights of the PANOS infinity range. Simultaneously, 40 TECTON LED continuous-row luminaires are currently being tested for a refurbishment of the lighting system installed at the engine manufacturing plant, which would cut energy consumption by half as compared to the conventional T16 continuous-row system.
Zumtobel. The Light.
The PMMA optic delivers targeted and efficient lighting. The existing colour temperature range of 4000 K and 6500 K is supplemented by a warm white version with 3000 K, making CRAFT S an interesting option for shop and retail applications. Installation on TECTON continuous-row lighting system is now even easier, thanks to the introduction of a CRAFT S variant delivered with a pre-installed TECTON mounting mechanism.
CRAFT S utilises the innovative lighting technology from the existing CRAFT range to ensure excellent light distribution. High rows of shelves can be illuminated just as efficiently as large open spaces. Thanks to the separate wide beam and narrow beam lens optics, this luminaire offers exactly the right solution for every industry application. The narrow beam optic was specially engineered to deliver uniform and efficient lighting for long areas of high shelving. As each LED has been assigned its own lens, the light output can be carefully directed to ensure precise illumination, excellent visual comfort and high efficiency. The wide beam optic was optimised for open production areas, where glare control and uniformity are particularly important.
Zumtobel. The Light.
The new generation of the continuous-row LED lighting system boasts improved energy efficiency and a significantly pared-down stylistic idiom. On-going development of LED technology has resulted in miniaturised design as well as an increased luminaire efficiency factor of up to 148 lm/W. Moreover, the newly developed split-lens technology allows efficient direction of light with high precision. Based on a point light source, the split lens uniformly directs the light along both sides, which reduces glare (UGR < 19) and results in targeted direction of light. As this prevents reflections on screens, TECTON can for instance also be used above cash desks in supermarkets. Thanks to reduced energy consumption, the costs are reduced even further. Furthermore, the existing versions have been converted to metric measurements and are now available in lengths of 1 m and 1.5 m; another batten luminaire of 2 m length has been added as well. This considerably facilitates designing a lighting solution using TECTON.
The new generation of TECTON LED is available in various colour temperatures of 3000 K, 4000 K and 6500 K at a colour rendering of Ra > 80. Thanks to an IP rating of 50, the LED module and optic are protected against soiling. Thus, the new TECTON continuous-row LED lighting system is suitable for use in industrial and logistics applications as well as in supermarkets.
Zumtobel. The Light.
The extended version of SLOTLIGHT infinity is provided with an opal optic supplied with a continuous diffuser that can be up to 20 metres long. Thus, SLOTLIGHT infinity makes it possible to create a consistent continuous-row system without any shadows or overlapping, providing architects and lighting designers with virtually unlimited flexibility. Smaller lighting modules with LED lighting points that can have any spacing pitch and luminaire lengths in multiples of 250 mm increase the scope for high-precision design and allow custom-fit configuration of the light line. Zumtobel has also simplified installation of the new generation's recessed version. A uniform appearance is ensured by prefabricated frames and spacers. The separation of luminaire body and frame allows the installers or drywall builders to perfectly integrate the continuous-row system in suspended ceilings. Thus, SLOTLIGHT infinity is an element of structural design that presents itself to the beholder as a consistent light line.
Analogous to its predecessor, SLOTLIGHT infinity is also available as surface-mounted, recessed and pendant luminaire and is supplied in the colour temperatures 3000 K and 4000 K. With an efficiency of 92 lm/W and 1200 lm per running meter, the light line is a role model in terms of economic efficiency as well.
Zumtobel. The Light.
With the new products added to the product range, it is now for the first time possible to use Zumtobel's SUPERSYSTEM in outdoor applications. SUPERSYSTEM outdoor is similar to the versatile lighting system for indoor applications and allows targeted illumination and presentation of outdoor spaces. The solution for outdoor spaces provides accents for vertical as well as horizontal surfaces and ensures a harmonious appearance of buildings both at daylight and by night. Squares and footpaths can be uniformly lit and flexibly integrated into urban surroundings. The product range's high variability allows to develop customer-specific lighting designs for indoor and outdoor applications using one single system.
Due to its nearly unlimited number of possible combinations, the solution is above all suitable for highly sophisticated lighting concepts. Until now, the system has primarily been applied in the areas of Art & Culture, Hotel & Wellness as well as Shop & Retail. Thanks to the additional products, SUPERSYSTEM has now also become an interesting option for implementing sophisticated lighting concepts in residential areas.
Zumtobel. The Light.
Zumtobel has been able to use a field study with retail chain Gerry Weber to demonstrate the significance of light in shop applications. Customer behaviour and reactions measured with implicit and explicit methods showed that target group-oriented lighting design concepts had a positive effect and led to a 10 percent increase in turnover. This research is a continuation of the laboratory study in which the light preferences of seven different customer groups were analysed using a neuropsychological target group model.
The Gerry Weber shop in Herford, Germany, was the location for the field test. The lighting concept was the only element that was changed in the store, which has now been open for a year. An LED spotlight solution from Zumtobel was installed specifically to meet the preferences of a key target group for Gerry Weber, the so-called Harmonisers. Harmonisers belong to the BALANCE "Limbic® Type" and therefore react positively to moderate accent lighting. As a result, the new look of the retail space in Herford was carefully designed to generate a bright and friendly atmosphere with a warm colour temperature of 3000 Kelvin.
General purchasing behaviour before and after the installation of the new lighting solution was then measured and observed over two months. In addition, certain customers were tested using the "Limbic® Emotional Assessment" (LEA), a method developed by Gruppe Nymphenburg, who worked with Zumtobel on this research project. LEA is able to empirically capture the slightest unconscious physical reactions, including brain activity and heart rate. Some customers were also interviewed about their shopping experience and turnover was compared with an equivalent reference store for the same period.
The results were clear - adjustment of the lighting situation to reflect typical target group preferences delivered a 10 percent increase in turnover compared to the reference store. Further analysis also revealed an even higher average sales increase amongst the specific target group for which the lighting solution was optimised.
Implicit measurements revealed an overwhelmingly positive emotional response from Gerry Weber customers to the newly installed Limbic® Lighting concept, particularly when compared with the original shop lighting. Explicit questioning also gave customers the opportunity to say how much they appreciated the positive atmosphere generated by the new Limbic® Lighting solution.
The reference store used to contrast the results of the field test was carefully chosen for its equivalent size, shop design, customer demographics and geographical proximity to Herford. Looking at the national picture, the branch with the Limbic® Lighting concept saw above-average sales when compared with all HOUSES of GERRY WEBER across Germany.
Reactions measured using the LEA methods demonstrated greater potential for buyer activation in response to point of sales (POS) displays in Herford. This means that customers showed a greater level of interest in the retail space and the products on offer, leading them to spend more time in the store. At the same time, analysis of the data showed how participants felt relaxed and exhibited fewer signs of stress.
Head of Retail Operations at Gerry Weber, Hörschläger Martin, was delighted with the outcome. "For us as an international fashion brand, it was fascinating to see clear scientific findings that prove the significant influence of light at the POS. The cooperation with Zumtobel was extremely positive and ultimately the key to us understanding and then responding to the light preferences of our target group. We have seen how profitable the Limbic® Lighting concept proved in our Herford store, with a marked increase in sales during the test period. In comparison with the reference store, the retail space with the optimised Limbic® Lighting solution achieved up to 10 percent more turnover.“
Ralf Knorrenschild, Senior Vice President Global Key Account Management Zumtobel, was equally enthusiastic. "This positive result confirms our view that light offers the greatest potential for sales growth at the POS - a fact that has often been overlooked. With Limbic® Lighting, we have managed to realise an exciting new form of buyer activation for our customers.“
The laboratory study
The most recent research in the area of neurosciences has shown that more than 80 % of buying decisions at the point of sale (POS) are made unconsciously, mainly depending on influences addressing people's emotions. However, the effects of light have so far been evaluated only by means of various questioning techniques, without taking the decisive aspect of the unconscious into account. For that reason, Zumtobel Research jointly with Gruppe Nymphenburg, a Munich-based consultancy and market research institute, initiated a laboratory study in order make the emotional effects of light on customers measurable empirically, recording their physiological responses.
For the laboratory study, the researchers used the “Limbic Model” developed by Gruppe Nympenburg, which focuses on the complex emotional personality structures of consumers. The subjects were assigned to seven different personality types, the “Limbic Types”, using a questionnaire. These included the “Bon vivants”, the “Hedonists”, the “Adventurers”, the “Per- formers”, the “Disciplinarians”, the “Traditionalists”, and the “Harmonisers”. The objective of the research project was to find out how these seven groups respond to various lighting scenarios at the POS. For this purpose, a new method developed by Gruppe Nymphenburg was used, the “Limbic Emotional Assessment” (LEA). Using this method, even the most minor physical responses can be measured. In the laboratory experiment, the subjects successively looked at 20 different lighting scenarios with various ambient and accent lighting features, colour temperatures, contrasts and light quantities. While doing so, their unconscious physical reactions, including brain waves and cardiac activity, were empirically measured. Based on the psychophysiological data collected, it was possible to clearly establish which of the lighting scenarios' parameters triggered positive or negative emotions, stimulation or relaxation in specific target groups.
The findings obtained clearly show that there is an optimal way to address each individual target group. It has also turned out that there is no single lighting scenario that has the same markedly positive impact on all “Limbic Types”. There are, however, individual lighting profiles that several types respond positively to. Three main groups were identified, each with similar requirements as to lighting solutions: the first group, BALANCE (Harmonisers, Traditionalists and Bon vivants), responded particularly positively to moderate accent lighting. The second group, STIMULANCE (Hedonists, Adventurers), responded most positively to lighting scenes with relatively strong contrasts, created by accent lighting and a variety of different spots. Group three, DOMINANCE (Performers, Disciplinarians), responded sensitively to unbalanced lighting concepts and can best be loaded with positive emotions through balanced, moderate effects. However, narrow-beam lighting with extreme contrasts triggered negative emotions in this group.
About the research method
The Limbic Emotional Assessment (LEA) research method, which has been developed by Gruppe Nymphenburg, is based on methods used in neurosciences as well as psychophysiology. The latter discipline is concerned with the relationship between brain activity and the related physical responses. In combination with Limbic, a brand and target group navigation model tried and tested in practical applications, LEA allows for a distinction according to specific target groups. In doing so, the scientifically tested LEA method combines five different parameters that capture even the tiniest of physical reactions.
From brain waves and skin conductance through to cardiac activity, numerous physical reactions of customers are measured to draw conclusions on their emotional state.

Zumtobel. The light.
This architectural principle of permeability was also central to the lighting concept, devised by the dedicated architectural and stage lighting design office of BELZNER HOLMES / LIGHT DESIGN ENGINEERING (LDE) and realised in close cooperation with Zumtobel. Daylight had to be able to pass through the large glass surfaces and be dispersed throughout the building to create a uniform natural lighting effect. However, to meet the high demands of this multifunctional application, it was also necessary to consider a series of further issues. LDE were tasked with designing a flexible lighting concept that could be adapted for different functions. This meant finding a way of being able to create the desired mood for events ranging from stylish receptions to breath-taking concerts and academic symposiums. To highlight the design language of the building, a discrete lighting solution was required to accentuate the flowing and contoured lines of the distinctive architecture. Diverging ceiling heights of between 2.4 and 10 metres also had to be taken into account. It was clear that a highly sophisticated lighting solution would be necessary to perform this delicate balancing act.
Following an extensive testing and exploratory phase, the decision was taken to use a bespoke lighting solution from Zumtobel. The overwhelmingly positive experience that LDE architect and lighting designer Prof. Uwe Belzner and his team had enjoyed with Zumtobel in the past and the considerable knowledge and technological expertise of the Vorarlberg-based lighting solution specialists were decisive factors. The core objective of the lighting solution was to achieve flicker-free LED lighting that could be dimmed right down to 0 percent. This would enable TV broadcasts in High Definition (HD) quality to be made from Montforthaus. Based on an existing Zumtobel technology that facilitates the flexible mixing of cold white or warm white light sources, the LDE offices in Stuttgart and Liechtenstein worked closely with Zumtobel to devise a custom-made solution for this project. The starting point for the new development was »PANOS infinity. The design and construction of this celebrated modular LED downlight range means that it could be installed throughout the different areas of the building. The PANOS infinity family blends the sophisticated design of Sottsass Associati and the advanced technological functionality synonymous with Zumtobel engineering. In addition, excellent energy efficiency and extra-long maintenance intervals deliver tangible cost savings and help protect the environment.
Stepless dimming from 100 to 0 percent makes the unique MFH-PANOS solution a world first in the field of architectural lighting. In stark contrast to previous products, the MFH-PANOS solution harnesses specially developed Zumtobel technology to achieve a smooth and flicker-free transition for the first time ever in the range from 10 to 0 percent. Extensive testing in the studios of Austrian television broadcaster ORF confirmed the high quality of this innovation. A series of experimental HD recordings were made without any flickering or visual disturbance. The colour temperature of MFH-PANOS can be fully adjusted from warm white to cold white to suit any occasion. The ratio of warm and cold white light can be controlled individually using separate DMX or DALI control channels. Depending on the necessary response rate, the integrated 28W, 30W or 40W downlights are equipped with intelligent DALI or DMX technology that enables the separate control of each luminaire. Optimal thermal management helps guarantee optimal energy efficiency, as special cooling features guarantee maximum light yield and thereby minimise energy consumption. Individually manufactured ring attachments in predefined RAL colours ensure seamless integration into the interior architecture.
"With the special solution for Montforthaus, we have developed a luminaire that is truly unique. The MFH-PANOS has been designed specifically to meet the needs of our customer, but the potential for global success is already clear," explained Philippe Rettenbacher, project manager from Zumtobel.
A total of 18 different Zumtobel products are present in Montforthaus, including »LIGHT FIELDS evolution in the stairwell, »ONDARIA in the café and »CRAFT as general lighting for the stage area. Altogether more than 2,500 Zumtobel luminaires were required, including around 750 pieces of the different MFH-PANOS variants. As well as the development of this special solution, Zumtobel offered a level of project support and attention to detail that came to characterise the close cooperation between all stakeholders.
Zumtobel. The Light.
Due to its low thermal mass and favourable structural engineering properties, wood as a carbon-neutral building material has played a crucial role right from the start for the architects of Behnisch Architekten in the implementation of this exemplary sustainable project. Hence, they designed the conference hall as a pre-fabricated timber construction – clad in untreated larch wood shingles and supported by just a few pillars and walls – that seems to float elegantly above a foyer landscape. This impression of lightness is further increased by up to 35 m wide protrusions and extensive glazing, the purpose of which is both daylight provision and establishing a visual link between the building and its surroundings.
What was essential for the design of the conference hall was the architects' idea to create a clearly structured space that would surround the delegates with the pleasant warmth of wood and at the same time direct their full attention to the speaker's desk. In order to achieve the mean illuminance level of 500 lx required on all task areas, ceiling-mounted luminaires were not an option because they would have added unruly structures to the wooden ceiling and thus gravely disturbed the uniform room ambience.
With the aim of contrasting the relatively stern triangle geometry of the wooden ceiling with a “soft” counterpart, Behnisch Architekten in cooperation with Zumtobel and the Stuttgart-based engineers from ArtEngineering started to design a light-weight, spherical luminaire with a “cloud-like” appearance. This luminaire was on the one hand supposed to provide atmospherically diffuse lighting, and on the other hand to accommodate technical components such as for instance loudspeakers or cameras.
For the luminaires inside the engineers designed a supporting structure made of aluminium and shaped like an icosahedron with 20 triangles and a side length of approx. 1000 mm. The actual surface geometry was based on a geodesic dome. The triangular elements typical of such structures were combined in a total of 260 hexagons, with the icosahedron's 12 junctions resulting per definition in pentagons. The precise three-dimensional shape and the uniformly 14 mm wide joint spacings of the 272 aluminium sheet honeycombs with a depth of some 100 mm as well as an appropriate lattice-type substructure were defined using efficient 3D software.
The final design represents the aesthetically appealing ideal of an oversized pollen grain with funnel-shaped hexagonal honeycombs and LED lighting points, which uniformly illuminate all spaces. Per sphere at the intersections between the individual honeycombs are therefor 540 custom-made, dimmable Zumtobel LED lighting points with a diameter of only 67 mm installed – a solution that is expected to be extremely beneficial thanks to the expected LEDs' long service life and extended maintenance intervals. For maintenance work inside the spheres weighing at least 500 kg, suspended from the ceiling on three stainless steel cords, one of the lateral segments can be removed at any time.
Also the rest of the building features aesthetic and subtle lighting solutions. For instance, numerous LINARIA LED light lines installed along the ceiling peripheries enhance the building's structure – flush mounted into the individual elements of the wooden vane ceiling – while providing light in the foyer. For this purpose, Zumtobel developed, among other things, an opalised plexiglass enclosure ensuring that no individual LED lighting points are visible.
The wood, the inventive architecture and the carefully into the interior design integrated lighting solutions bestow the new conference hall of WIPO with a distinct appearance, which appears to be magical when entering, but in no way disturbs the delegates doing their work.
Zumtobel. The Light.
This winter, night-time appearance of the ski resort of Lech has been changed by a newly implemented LED lighting concept. In collaboration with Dieter Bartenbach, Zumtobel has developed a custom solution which skilfully illuminates not only the townscape of Lech, but also the river of the same name. A specifically developed control system adjusts the lighting levels depending on the time of day or night, so that the lighting conditions will be perfect at all times.
Thanks to the new lighting concept developed by Dieter Bartenbach and implemented in close collaboration with Zumtobel, the town is now presented in perfect light. “The existing street lighting system with its obsolete technology was simply not up to contemporary requirements any more,” remembers Karlheinz Egger from the Lech building authority. However, it took many meetings and information events as well as a lot of persuading to win over political decision-makers, administrators and the local hotel keepers to opt for a new lighting concept based on LED technology.
The situation that Dieter Bartenbach was facing when he started his planning work was the same he finds again and again at other locations: a “lighting mess” that “blurs” the townscape. The diffuse lighting situation is usually caused by conventional outdoor lighting mostly involving lamps with open light distribution. This is countered by the illumination of shop windows and advertising facilities through highly excessive light radiation, which makes the original townscape disappear completely. “The perception of space is overturned in that the attention of the viewer is drawn exclusively to the sources of glare,” Bartenbach explains.
The new concept ensures that the nightly townscape of Lech with its typical features is deliberately highlighted by LED lighting which provides accent lighting and defines spaces. The luminaire especially manufactured for this purpose dissolves the lighting intensity into several LED points, so that passers-by are hardly dazzled any more. Additionally, the light is much more precise and directional than before. This is achieved through precise milling of the LED lighting points. Another benefit is the modular design, similar to a system of building blocks: the luminaires can be configured with 6 to 34 LED points, each with approx. 2 W. Thus, the lighting situation can be adjusted as required. For the columns, too, Zumtobel has developed various different versions depending on the location.
It is primarily the linear alignment of spaces that is characteristic of the village and is emphasised through the new lighting solution: the main street, which is pleasantly illuminated in the way of an esplanade, the house façades and the river. Making the river perceptible within the nocturnal townscape was considered especially important by the planners. The lighting brings the river back into the town by illuminating the banks and walls. Both are reflected along the water course and make for a dynamic image captivating the viewer through the movement of the current, so that a three-dimensional effect is created. Another spatial element is the illumination of the façades. Here, the modular system proves particularly beneficial. Instead of installing the luminaire heads on the columns, they can also be installed on the façades, thus not only providing for uniformity of appearance and a balanced lighting effect but also for spectacular illumination of the hotel façades. This argument eventually convinced the hotel keepers, who are themselves responsible for financing these measures.
The new lighting is dispensed in a well-dosed manner: from dusk till 10 p.m., all spaces of the town are illuminated. After 10 p.m., façade illumination is switched off. At midnight, the brightness of the street lighting is reduced to a low ambient lighting level. The finely tuned brightness levels are made possible by special, web-based lighting control: each luminaire contains a radio sensor that is used for dimming and switching the light. In this way, the idea of the Smart City is introduced into the alpine landscape of Vorarlberg.
The new town lighting is therefore not only a visual improvement. Precise focussed light combined with effective glare reduction and lighting control ensures that the town is illuminated in a sustainable manner. The LED luminaires used are more efficient and environmentally compatible than conventional diffuse lighting concepts with open light distribution, which emit 60 per cent of the light into the sky with no effect. In addition, light pollution and the impact of light on animals are reduced as well. Lech's new nightly townscape is therefore an investment into the future in many respects.

Zumtobel found the right partners for this ambitious project in three designers - Simon Fisher and Matt Free from »F Mark Ltd and Luke Smith-Wightman. "We have questioned absolutely everything – from existing lighting solutions to the way offices are designed. The unique shape of LINETIK grew out of a desire to really only use what is needed," explains Matt Free, Director at F Mark Ltd.
A radical approach that focuses on the real essentials - the best light for every task in every workplace for every employee. No stone was left unturned in the development of a new optical system to achieve this target. Despite the compact physical dimensions, the optical system had to use minimal energy to deliver a precise lighting distribution – light that is directed exactly where the individual requires it, without the inconvenience of glare and anything less than complete uniformity.
One significant outcome of this tireless pursuit of lighting technology innovation is the newly developed reflector, which significantly contributes to the drastic reduction in the material footprint of the product. In order to create a reflector with such compact dimensions, without compromising key elements such as glare control and lighting distribution, the development team opted to use reflector modules. A series of fully-automated high-precision tools inject a special composite material that is then vapour-coated with highly reflective aluminium.
The reflector for the direct light output delivers exceptionally uniform illumination over the workplace, especially when compared to other free-standing solutions. In the longitudinal direction, light is directed asymmetrically onto the work surface, whilst in the transverse direction, a type of double asymmetry is achieved to ensure a balanced distribution for workplaces with two people. LINETIK relies on an extrusion lens for the indirect output, spreading light over a wide ceiling area and thereby creating a pleasant atmosphere, even in offices with lower ceilings.
The slim silhouette of LINETIK belies a robust product that is easily assembled and positioned anywhere in the room. Direct and indirect lighting elements can be individually controlled, ensuring optimum visual comfort for every task. In addition an integral motion sensor ensures the luminaire is off when workers are absent.

One of the most important ecclesiastical treasures in Europe has been renovated with a discrete and energy-efficient LED lighting solution from Austrian lighting manufacturer Zumtobel. The ambitious project was shaped by stringent conservation issues for the lighting of historic exhibits.
Renovation of the treasury lighting concept was scheduled for the beginning of 2014, with the clear aim of reducing the high costs associated with electricity and lamp replacement. After successfully applying to join a government initiative that would cover 40 percent of the outlay for a new lighting concept, the Plan Ing Aachen electrical planning team, under the supervision of Ralf Wolters, was tasked with managing the project. A series of complex requirements were outlined to the electrical planners, an established member of the Zumtobel Lighting Competence Program. First of all, the lighting concept had to reduce operating costs. In addition, the government initiative set out further stringent stipulations with regard to efficiency and payback periods. At the same time, the concept had to incorporate the latest knowledge about conservation of historic exhibits. This meant excluding daylight from the Aachen Cathedral Treasury and keeping ambient lighting to an absolute minimum. All installation work had to be completed within a two-month period, during which the building would remain open to the public. This clearly required a high degree of planning and flexibility to keep disruption for visitors to an absolute minimum.
A sophisticated lighting concept was crucial to protect the highly sensitive exhibits. As a result, cathedral architect Helmut Maintz called on the services of Photometrik GmbH from the German town of Darmstadt. They were asked to use their expert technical knowledge to assess the likely impact of possible solutions on the exhibits. "In a series of meticulous tests, each light source was carefully adjusted with the help of the curator. The final lighting scene was saved digitally and can now be modified by the curators to create new lighting scenarios," explains Ralf Wolters. The challenge was to devise an LED lighting solution that delivers both effective and gentle accent lighting with minimal UV and IR radiation.
A fibre-optic network that had illuminated the historical objects prior to the renovation was left in place. However, low-voltage light engines were replaced by dimmable LED units. Developed specially for museums, exhibitions and art galleries, these LED light engines deliver around twice as much light as the old halogen solution. To tastefully accentuate the rich heritage of the exhibits, Zumtobel recommended a combination of ARCOS LED contour spotlights, LED ARCOS xpert 200 and miniature spotlights from the » SUPERSYSTEM series. The » ARCOS spotlight range, developed to precisely illuminate objects with high-quality light, is characterised by minimalist design and clear shapes. Simple design clarity is also a feature of the versatile SUPERSYSTEM lighting system. The extremely small and extremely energy efficient high-power LED spotlight provides excellent accent lighting, even from greater distances.
A series of 50 » PANOS infinity was specified to help lessen the requirements of the basic room lighting. This downlight system is the perfect choice for areas where both economic efficiency and high-quality ambient lighting are important factors.
As a further measure, the entire cathedral treasury was equipped with occupancy sensors to ensure that the exhibits are exposed to artificial light for as little time as possible. The light is automatically turned off in areas where no visitors or staff are present. Each luminaire can be individually dimmed according to the particular requirements using a tablet PC. The cathedral treasury has been able to achieve huge savings as a direct result of the LED lighting solution from Zumtobel. The innovative LED technology has slashed energy consumption by 70,000 kWh per year. As the new LED luminaires emit much less heat, there will also be energy savings from the air conditioning, which is used to maintain a constant temperature of 18°C and an ambient humidity of 55%. Overall, a total saving of at least 22,000 Euros per year is expected from the treasury.

By taking into account the conservational and energy-efficiency aspects, we have been able to blend the past and the future in its most beautiful form, preserving the Aachen Cathedral Treasury for posterity," enthuses cathedral architect Helmut Maintz.
