PANOS infinity – Not just a luminaire family for architectural lighting

The PANOS infinity luminaire family has established itself as a sophisticated “building block” for every lighting task. Now four new variants further strengthen the reputation of this downlight as a perfectly tailored lighting solution. Specific versions with carefully engineered light distributions stimulate the creativity of every planner.
    More informationLess information
The PANOS infinity luminaire family from Zumtobel is the epitome of formally integrated architectural lighting. The four new variants presented for the first time in November 2016 help increase the potential for lighting solutions that correspond to the finer details of every application. The light distribution of each PANOS version is specially optimised to reflect the different requirements in a building – including functional illumination. PANOS infinity therefore effortlessly meets the varied demands placed on general and accent lighting, such as ensuring homogeneous illumination of horizontal and vertical surfaces with high light quality, enabling precise accentuation and creating a pleasant atmosphere. As a result, Zumtobel has crafted a product portfolio with high aesthetic appeal that covers every lighting task and inspires every lighting planner.

A choice of round and square designs, frameless or with a mounting frame, with diameters of 68 mm, 100 mm and now also with a diameter or edge length of 200 mm, helps fuel this inspiration.  The PANOS infinity “building blocks” empower architects, lighting designers and electric planners to devise optimal task-specific lighting solutions for every room – solutions that are optimal both in terms of the overall building concept and the wellbeing of individual users. Whether in a reception area or a corridor, an office or a conference room, a lobby or an informal communication zone, a shop or a museum, one thing remains constant: both the discrete-looking downlights and the fine wallwashers blend beautifully with the interior architecture, combining norm-compliant illumination with high system efficiency and a specific lighting effect.

Precise light control with added know-how
These benefits are the direct result of high-quality lens and reflector technologies, which stem from Zumtobel’s proven competence and vast experience in all elements of lighting design. Lens systems are characterised by exact light control, less stray light and the ability to produce various beam angles, including narrow distributions. The reflector then functions as a design element. Brightness is reduced, glare is limited and visual comfort is enhanced. The “pure” reflector technology retains an important role in downlights with large diameters and high luminous fluxes, helping to negate the need for complex solutions with several lens systems. As a result, a diverse range with a single uniform look delivers precisely the right light control for every lighting task.

The new additions introduce the possibility of “warm dimming” and an excellent colour rendering index of CRI> 90, along with colour temperatures of 2700 K, 3000 K and 4000 K, as well as 3500 K for the American market. The comprehensive PANOS infinity portfolio helps further increase its immense application potential.

    New versions with task-specific charm
The PANOS infinity High Lumen downlight, with a diameter of 200 mm and an extremely high luminous flux of up to 7400 lumens, is ideal for use in high rooms such as atriums, airport buildings and hotel lobbies. The light distributions are defined by the reflector geometry, helping engineer two versions with specific beam angles: Spot with 13° and Flood with 30°. These high-performance “large-scale” recessed luminaires represent useful new tools for the creation of attractive architectural lighting with a uniform aesthetic character.

The PANOS infinity Accent Beam downlights put the emphasis firmly on accent lighting. The round design has a diameter of 100 mm and the square version has an edge length of 100 mm. Driven by a dedication to ensure perfect presentation with outstanding lighting quality, high-quality lens technology has been harnessed to define three distinct beam angles: Spot with 14°, Flood with 29° and Very Wide Flood with over 50°. The model with a black reflector is a particular design highlight. This feature may have little effect in terms of lighting technology, but it means that users see a calm, uniform ceiling rather than merely “light from above”, thereby enhancing visual comfort.

Focused accents are also provided by the “small” PANOS infinity adjustable, which is only 68 mm in either diameter or edge length, depending on whether the round or square version is selected. Using a specially developed lens system, the light cone can be swivelled by up to 28° and rotated 355°, guaranteeing optimal alignment without the need for any tools. The range includes Spot with a 15° beam angle and Flood with a 30° beam angle.
The miniaturised PANOS infinity wallwasher is optimised for the homogeneous illumination of vertical surfaces with up to 825 lumens of high-quality light. Boasting a diameter or edge length of just 68 mm, with a mounting frame or simply frameless, these luminaires nicely complement the “bigger” members of the PANOS infinity family.

Every architect or planner can now use the carefully thought-out PANOS infinity range from Zumtobel to truly indulge their creative instincts. The downlight, wallwasher and directional downlight “building blocks”, crafted in line with the design vision of Chris Redfern, Sottsass Associati, reflect every facet of lighting competence. Together with a consistent look, the PANOS infinity modular system offers unprecedented design freedom. The result is a raft of fascinating lighting solutions, ranging from functional lighting tasks focused on system efficiency to high-quality architectural lighting.

VAERO – New design highlight for modern office architecture

With its contemporary, minimalist design, the new VAERO LED pendant luminaire incorporates itself unobtrusively into the architecture of modern office environments, and at the same time convinces with maximum visual comfort. With the aid of special technology, the light is evenly spread from the luminaire centre to the edge – for a pleasant distribution of light and a harmonious room atmosphere.
    More informationLess information
The new generation of employees works digitally and in a networked manner – sometimes independently and sometimes as a team, and generally at any time, in any place. This places new demands on contemporary working environments. Modern workspaces support this new method of working, for example with different work areas for different requirements – such as co-working spaces, team rooms, quiet zones or individual offices. To suit this flexible working environment, Zumtobel has designed the new VAERO LED pendant luminaire, which, thanks to its clear, minimalist and discreet design, can be integrated into very different office areas and almost any room architecture – whether a classic working environment or a creative communication zone.

Perfect purism – the VAERO design
The secret behind the VAERO design is the focus on essentials. A transparent light-emitting surface, clear, straight lines and the elimination of the converter box on the ceiling characterise this minimalist design. Thanks to the special lighting technology and the particularly narrow and low centre bar, the housing remains extremely slim and the wings form a clear edge. In addition, the luminaire body is designed without a frame, with the aid of special cladding. In this way, this graceful luminaire remains discreetly in the background and integrates itself seamlessly into the room architecture. On being switched on, VAERO looks like a super-slim, almost hovering, evenly-illuminating light disk. When switched off, however, it appears no less elegant, as the transparent light guide panel is almost transparent. Aligned to the minimalist appearance of modern workspaces, VAERO is also available in special colour shades: Here the centre bar is available in untreated aluminium, for example for an office environment with concrete architecture, or in black or bronze colours.

Invisible high performance – VAERO technology
It is only the invisible qualities of its ultra-modern technology that permits the unique design of the VAERO. The pendant luminaire features innovative side-lit technology. Here the LED light in the light sources is uncoupled in the transparent light guide panel and distributed evenly from the centre to the edge. Individual LED points of light are dissipated with the aid of defined structures. The result is a homogeneous illumination of the light-emitting surface without the formation of stripes. The direct/indirect lighting and the wide indirect light distribution create a balanced brightness distribution and reduce contrasts – this improves the visual comfort, above all in generously-sized large-area offices. This effect is further reinforced through excellent glare control, which is particularly important when working at a display. These different components ensure a pleasant lighting atmosphere within a room and thus increase the well-being of the employees. Perfect lighting quality and the extremely long lifetime of the luminaire are guaranteed by the new-generation LED modules. The new VAERO thus not only fulfils the maximum demands on visual comfort, but also on the efficiency of modern office illumination.

A perspective – VAERO with tunableWhite in 2017
One of the requirements of modern office lighting is the dynamic adaptation of the lighting to daytime, different visual tasks and individual needs. For this reason, during the development of new lighting solutions, Zumtobel pursues the "Active Light" approach, according to which the lighting is adapted in a target-orientated manner on the respective preferences of the user and the changing room situations. According to a Zumtobel study, most people prefer in offices an individually controlled and colour temperature adjustable LED illumination with a proportion of direct and indirect light. Based on this knowledge, Zumtobel will be launching a further VAERO generation in spring 2017 featuring the tunableWhite technology – as response to the user requirements for an adaptive, customizable light.

    The new MELLOW LIGHT

An icon returns to set new standards in office lighting
The new MELLOW LIGHT is far more than just an innovative LED luminaire. The sixth generation of this office lighting icon sets new standards when it comes to adapting lighting to suit the specific needs of users, drawing on extensive Zumtobel knowledge about how light affects humans on a visual, biological and emotional level.
    More informationLess information
MELLOW LIGHT is also characterised by an exciting new design. Daniel Stromborg, Practice Area Leader at Gensler, has succeeded in developing the style of the luminaire while still retaining a clear link to 25 years of lighting history. Immediately recognisable yet slimmer and more elegant, the form supports the state-of-the-art lighting technology that helps this design icon adapt perfectly to the constantly changing requirements of the contemporary office.

    MELLOW LIGHT evolution and infinity
Both the look and the vision of MELLOW LIGHT are unmistakable, with these two aspects combining to deliver high quality light that is as close as possible to natural daylight. To achieve this difficult feat, MELLOW LIGHT has been extensively developed and is now available in two versions: MELLOW LIGHT evolution and MELLOW LIGHT infinity. Both variants ensure the balanced illumination of work surfaces, walls and ceilings to create an open, bright room atmosphere in which glare and disturbing shadows become a thing of the past.

Both versions are also available with the tunableWhite technology by Zumtobel, allowing the light intensity and colour temperature to be independently and seamlessly adjusted between 3000 and 6000 K. MELLOW LIGHT evolution and MELLOW LIGHT infinity can therefore be used for the implementation of the "Active Light" concept developed by Zumtobel, which imitates the dynamics of daylight that are so important for humans. In the spirit of Human Centric Lighting, tunableWhite supports the natural biorhythm and offers maximum visual comfort for different tasks by providing the right light at the right time, with the appropriate intensity and colour. On an emotional level, this also has a positive influence on communication and the creativity of employees.

MELLOW LIGHT infinity goes one step further, as the outer wings and the central segment can now be controlled independently of each other. In line with the results of a Zumtobel user study into perceived light quality in the office, which revealed that many people find the standard 500 lux insufficient, MELLOW LIGHT infinity enables the individual and flexible adaptation of the light to reflect different needs, preferences and situations. The two light wings create a pleasant basic brightness of 300-400 lux, which gives the room a welcoming atmosphere, while work surfaces can be perfectly illuminated with an additional 400 lux from the central segment.

Combining MELLOW LIGHT infinity with the LITECOM lighting management system and the innovative ATIVO contrast sensor means that the light atmosphere can be automatically adjusted to reflect not only the amount of available daylight, but also the number of people present and their location in the room. ATIVO recognises the way a space is being used and automatically selects the appropriate lighting mood, paving the way for Activity Based Lighting.

    Different optics for maximum light
While the outer wings provide the soft and diffuse light synonymous with MELLOW LIGHT, there is a choice of two optics for the central section. The crystal optic is a new interpretation of the classic lens optic, guaranteeing glare-free illumination with up to 4800 lumens. This makes the crystal optic ideal for applications where more than 500 lux is required or where there are larger distances between the luminaires. The lenticular optic uses prism louvres to blend a gentle and homogeneous appearance with excellent glare suppression for up to 3500 lumens. Both optics meet the relevant standards for VDU workstations with UGR < 19.

The central segment and the diffuse outer wings are separated by a delicate chrome accent, which has a very special significance for the designer Daniel Stromborg: "It was a great honour for me to further develop James Irvine’s design of the last MELLOW LIGHT, as I have great respect for his work. Irvine inserted a small step between the wing and the actual light source, which we most definitely wanted to retain as a homage to James and his team. A very subtle detail arises from the interaction between the crystalline primary optic and this step, which I also call the 'Irvine Step'. This effect plays an important role in our overall design concept."

    Design variety
The MELLOW LIGHT portfolio encompasses a comprehensive range of rectangular and square luminaires in a wide variety of designs for ceiling-recessed or surface-mounted installation. The recessed luminaire is available for the M600 and M625 module sizes. As a surface-mounted fitting, a series of optional colours helps the luminaire adapt to the individual needs of the interior architecture. While the white luminaire can be discreetly integrated into drywall ceilings, the silver version creates a flexible transition between the product and the exposed concrete. If highlights are required, additional versions in brown, black and naturally anodised aluminium can be specified. The optional colours can be easily viewed and ordered from the myMELLOW LIGHT section of the online product catalogue.

    Global roll-out
MELLOW LIGHT is the first Zumtobel luminaire to be launched directly with an international platform. This helps guarantee a uniform lighting concept for all users, no matter if they are in Dubai or in China.

Zumtobel builds a bridge to nature with Active Light

Connecting with nature - Active Light supports human nature by drawing inspiration from the character and dynamics of natural light. It takes the three levels of light into account (visual, emotional and biological) and adapts four specific light dimensions to suit constantly changing human needs by modifying intensity, direction, colour and time. This essential relationship between humans and light supports people naturally in every aspect of their personal and professional lives.
    More informationLess information
Light is our invisible companion. It helps us perceive the world with our eyes and creates an appropriate atmosphere without us even realising – during the day and at night. It is responsible for the synchronisation of our sleep-wake rhythm and influences essential bio-chemical processes that take place in the body. The light of the sun shapes reality in a variety of ways and represents the original natural light source with which individuals are connected, forming a key elementary relationship. Yet the majority of people in industrialised countries now spend around 80 per cent of the day indoors, often without the beneficial effects of direct daylight. As a result, the connection to the natural timer of the internal clock is increasingly being compromised.

Connecting with nature - Natural light is dynamic
Compared to mostly static artificial light solutions, the light of the sun encompasses a variety of different facets. Active Light is based on this rich diversity, distinguishing between light intensity and colour as well as light direction and timing. These four dimensions of light are adapted dynamically to suit the needs of the human being, helping each individual experience positive light effects on a visual, emotional and biological level. In addition, Active Light integrates the knowledge gained from studies and research, along with extensive practical experience in various different application areas. By adopting a holistic approach, Active Light responds to the special relationship between people and light and provides the right light at the right time – right through the day and the night.

    Dynamic light works
Active Light delivers sustainable added value in every application by putting the focus firmly on specific requirements. Shaped by the individual needs, tasks and preferences, Active Light is defined by a dynamic that helps stabilise the natural biorhythm of the human being, enabling maximum visual comfort and stimulating positive emotions.

Creating light creates inspiration - The right light not only optimises visual comfort in the office. Active Light brings the dynamics of daylight to the workplace, supporting the natural biorhythm and enhancing wellbeing and satisfaction, while also helping foster a positive atmosphere in terms of communication and creativity. For example, the new MELLOW LIGHT could be included in this type of lighting solution. With the help of tunableWhite technology and intelligent control systems such as LITECOM, this luminaire adapts its colour temperature and light intensity throughout the course of the day. In addition, MELLOW LIGHT provides more light than stipulated in the latest lighting standards, offering users the chance to work with up to 800 lux, depending on individual preference and the current task.

Creating light creates precision - Active Light in industrial applications takes into account the visual, emotional and biological needs of both those who are busy during the day and those who work through the night. Activity-based lighting is also possible when lighting control systems are supplemented with innovative sensors such as the ATIVO contrast sensor. New sensor technology not only transmits information about light readings and presence, but can even recognise the number and location of people in a space, along with the frequency and patterns of their movements. This capability helps make sure that the right lighting scenario is provided for a particular activity and additionally supports safety, precision and quality.

Creating light creates emotion – Blending Active Light with Zumtobel's Limbic® lighting approach in retail applications makes it possible to impeccably showcase brands and products for specific target groups. It creates emotional experiences that appeal to all the senses of the consumer. Highly efficient downlights like PANOS infinity harness tunableWhite technology to provide an excellent colour rendering of Ra 90 across a broad range of colour temperatures. This guarantees maximum design flexibility, as the light can be carefully tailored to complement the colour and material of the product. This in turn facilitates accurate customer perception and therefore a more accurate assessment of quality.

Creating light creates imagination - Active Light focuses on the protection of sensitive artworks in the field of art and culture, while simultaneously creating authentic and inspiring sensory experiences for the visitor. SUPERSYSTEM is the ideal lighting tool to solve the challenging and varied lighting tasks associated with museums and galleries. The delicate spots, which remain very much in the background, can call on a wide range of accessories and be combined with lighting controls to achieve the maximum effect for every piece of art.

Creating light creates interaction - Active Light gives public spaces, squares and streets added charisma and character, making them more attractive and improving the way people interact with the world around them. In outdoor applications, Zumtobel uses modular lighting tools such as SUPERSYSTEM outdoor to cover differentiated lighting tasks and to address the varying needs of individuals when day gives way to night. The appropriate integration of the right controls technology blends several light levels with targeted three-dimensional effects to maximise visual comfort, safety and the overall quality of outdoor life.

Active Light provides the right light at the right time. To carefully imitate the dynamics of natural light, Active Light uses Zumtobel luminaires with Zumtobel tunableWhite technology, which enables seamless adjustment of the colour temperature and light intensity to reflect the subtle changes in sunlight. In offices and industrial buildings, tunableWhite supports the human biorhythm with cold-white lighting moods until early afternoon, followed by lower-intensity warmer light hues as evening approaches. In applications such as art and culture or shop and retail, the key benefit is being able to adapt the colour temperature to achieve the best possible presentation of exhibits and products. Depending on the particular tones and materialisation, this level of authenticity and quality can only be achieved by providing just the right light colour.

As well as tunableWhite luminaires, intelligent sensor technology and lighting management systems such as LITECOM can play a crucial role with Active Light. These components use stored time and calendar entries and either integrate or complement the amount of daylight available to offer the right lighting scenario at the right time – and the energy balance sheet also receives a welcome boost. Lighting solutions using innovations like the ATIVO multi-zonal sensor go one step further by aiming to put the focus even more firmly on the individual. This is achieved by proactively adjusting the lighting scenario in line with the function, location and number of people in the room.

    Lighting Solution

Zumtobel part of the game at the new DFB museum

Under the motto "We are football", the German Football Association (DFB) has created a museum that offers its visitors an innovative, multimedial and contextually sophisticated experience. A lighting solution from Zumtobel, the LUXMATE LITENET lighting management system, is a key player that will meet the scenographic and emotional expectations.
    More informationLess information
The 2016 European Championship currently has a firm grip on Europe and the German national team are well on the way to writing another chapter of football history. Since October 2015, the German Football Museum in Dortmund has been the home of unforgettable footballing moments in Germany. The exhibition is spread over 3,300 m² and impresses with a modern concept that offers visitors a high-quality experience with interactive and multimedial content. With an exciting sequence of rooms and variety of materialisation, the diverse dramaturgy naturally demands the right lighting concept that on the one hand highlights certain elements, e.g. to accentuate the national team's gleaming trophies, and on the other hand guides people specifically through the rooms. Moreover, light also plays an important emotional role, not just when informing different generations and inspiring reflection, but to surprise, touch and inspire them and, last but not least, to entertain them.

With this in mind, Zumtobel convinced the contractors, architects and planners with their competence in the area of lighting control and was awarded the contract for a large part of the museum's interior lighting. The key lighting solution is the flexible lighting management system LUXMATE LITENET, which enables the luminaires' luminous intensity and colour temperature to be independently defined and adjusted – the right lighting scenario can be configured for the respective area of application. Moreover, it provides integration with the emergency escape lighting using the emergency lighting system ONLITE, which is used throughout the entire building. General lighting is taken care of thanks to the TECTON continuous-row luminaire, PANOS downlights and Cardan E1 gimbal-mounted luminaire modules, conciliating efficient lighting with great light quality and ideal colour rendering. In staircases and passages, the aesthetic Sottile light line, a project luminaire based on the SLOTLIGHT infinity slim, emphasises subtle accents and ensures and an excellent atmosphere in the room in which visitors feel at ease.

    Lighting Solution

Maximum effect from a minimalist lighting solution

Zumtobel uses SUPERSYSTEM outdoor to support effective design and uniform illumination at the new Sägerbrücke bridge in Dornbirn.
    More informationLess information
The comprehensive renovation of the Dornbirn Stadtstrasse (city street) from the Kronenkreuzung (crown junction) to the Sägerstrasse (sawyer street) and the new construction of the Sägerbrücke bridge represent a pioneering engineering project. The new Sägerbrücke bridge not only caters for different needs and interests, but also represents an architectural highlight by helping art become an integral part of the public space. The lighting solution for the bridge was developed and realised by Zumtobel in close cooperation with the architect Hugo Dworzak, the city planner Stefan Burtscher and the artist Hubert Lampert, who has crafted a truly eye-catching element in the middle of the bridge with the “Do.Helix” installation.

In terms of pure functionally the Sägerbrücke bridge offers a crossing over the Dornbirner Ach river, but it is also a key point for cars and lorries accessing the downtown area and a busy hub for public transport. For this reason it was necessary to create space for an intelligent traffic management solution to increase the quality of the daily experience for around 1600 urban and regional bus users and to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. With a width of 37.5 metres and a length of 32.5 metres, the bridge is actually wider than it is long. Four lanes of traffic are flanked on each side by a 7.5-metre-wide section that incorporates a pedestrian walkway, a bike lane and a waiting area for bus users.

The key challenge for the lighting solution was to ensure a uniform illumination that covered the total area and complied fully with the relevant standards for road transport, cycle paths and pedestrian crossings, despite only having two luminaire mounting positions to work with – one at each end of the bridge. Zumtobel impressed the architect, the artist Hubert Lampert and those responsible for the city planning with a pair of 13-metre-high masts for the customised SUPERSYSTEM outdoor LED luminaire, along with the linear, restrained design language of the product itself, which integrated discreetly into the overall architectural concept.

One of the major advantages of LED technology is the greater design freedom enabled by the compact size of the components. Each mast measures just 300mm by 300mm and yet still has room to incorporate 13 luminaires, with each luminaire made up of 18 LED light tubes. By grouping six LED light tubes and directing these towards a specific part of the bridge, it was possible to achieve a completely uniform illumination of the entire surface and maximum visual comfort without causing glare for users crossing the bridge.

The Sägerbrücke bridge uses a neutral white colour temperature of 4000 K, in line with the standards specified by the local authorities, to deliberately stand out from its surroundings and to highlight the square-like opening into the downtown area. The low connected load of just 43W for each luminaire (560W for each lighting mast) and the precise light distribution, which helps avoid unnecessary light pollution, mean that SUPERSYSTEM outdoor also represents an extremely energy-efficient choice. The minimalist design language of the product delivers high visual quality without taking centre stage, so that both the architecture of the “island bridge” and the sculpture in the centre can be fully appreciated.

The Lichtdesign Preis was introduced to recognise the work of lighting designers who craft lighting concepts that make a significant contribution to the quality of the built environment. This year the prestigious awards were handed out on 12th May in Munich’s Löwenbräukeller. The Lufthansa Integrated Operation Control Center (IOCC) ran out a clear winner in the Office / Administration category. The illumination concept created by lighting designers Katja Winkelmann, Robert von Sichart and Juan Rivera from the Licht01 Lighting Design office from Hamburg was realised using a Zumtobel lighting solution.

The IOCC Lufthansa is located on the top floor of a Lufthansa office building at Frankfurt Airport and houses the air traffic operations for planes flying to and from Frankfurt. The control centre is manned by shift workers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The architectural concept was faced with the challenges of optically defining individual working areas and creating separate zones in the 2500-square-metre room with a relatively low ceiling height of around 3 metres. The lighting design plays an integral role in the fulfilment of these objectives. A customised ceiling structure developed by the architects and lighting designers works in combination with a series of illuminated ceiling panels, which are made up of backlit microprismatic panels. These also have a skylight effect, conveying an impression of daylight for workplaces that are situated well away from any windows.

Zumtobel helped implement the special lighting solution with a custom-made recessed LED luminaire. The light ceiling is controlled using the LUXMATE LITENET lighting management system, which enables the adjustment of the colour temperature between 3000 and 6000 Kelvin and the modification of the lighting intensity. The lighting solution also includes a special version of the PANOS LED downlight.

    Lighting Solution

Light as the core element of a major museographic project

The LUXMATE LITENET lighting management system combines with IYON Tunable White spotlights to perfectly present the works of Rodin in the heart of the renovated Hotel Biron in Paris.
    More informationLess information
After a complete restoration project lasting three years, the magnificent Hotel Biron, which has housed the Rodin Museum in Paris since 1919, reopened on 12th November 2015 - the 175th anniversary of the birth of the renowned French sculptor. The renovation of the building started in 2012 and involved the complete renewal of the museographic course with the careful design and integration of a continuous flowing circuit. Accessibility has been significantly improved and issues such as the protection of both the artworks and the building, as well as the preservation of the architectural heritage, were also addressed. Richard Duplat, Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, led the historic renovation of the building, whilst revisions to the museography and the upgrading of standards throughout the museum were planned and implemented by the architect Dominique Brard of l’Atelier de l’Île.

The new Rodin Museum now presents the work of the sculptor in a more comprehensive manner, helping a wide audience gain a better understanding of the history, work and techniques of Auguste Rodin. “Find the peculiarity of bright, warm and moving environments and promote personal confrontation of the visitor with the object - these were my priorities,” explained Catherine Chevillot, Rodin Museum Director. The lighting concept imagined by Stéphanie Daniel is very much focused on the effective highlighting of the sculptures. At the beginning of the project, the lighting designer planned to expose the artificial light to natural light, but several obstacles hindered the process. Budgets were restricted, LED performance did not yet meet the requirements stipulated by the lighting designer and no lighting management system was able to vary the intensity and colour temperature of each unit according to the daylight. Indeed, the first tests showed that it was necessary to programme each luminaire individually to specifically highlight bronze and plaster sculptures in the same room.

Once the IYON LED spotlight was chosen, thanks to its high CRI rating of 90 and compact form, Stéphanie Daniel worked together with engineers from Zumtobel to adapt the design of the product by replacing the glass diffuser and white louvres with a honeycomb material. The patented reflector-lens system enables a precise photometric distribution. In addition, the Tridonic TALEXXengine SLE PREMIUM, and the blend of red and white LEDs offer an exceptionally high-quality spectral distribution. Based on the PI-LED technology, the Tunable White technology makes it possible to vary the colour temperature between 2600 K     and 5300 K. Finally, the lighting management programme was configured to include different scenarios specific to each spotlight, depending on the particular work of art, the season (summer or winter) and the time of day (afternoon or evening).

The spotlights all differ in intensity and around half of them vary in terms of colour temperature. In this way, variations of natural light can be taken into account whilst still very much respecting the contrasts on the works. A photometric curve has been extrapolated for each luminaire and reflected in the LITENET lighting management system that operates the entire installation. Thanks to this combination of considered planning and innovative technology, it has been possible to exquisitely preserve the subtle connection between daylight and artificial light throughout the course of the day and the different seasons. “This kind of lighting design has been realised in a museum for one of the first times. The treatment of light has occupied a prominent place in the planning for the new Rodin Museum. It has been a founding value of the museographic project and essential in order to display the sculptures properly and to play with the volumes,” commented architect Dominique Brard from Atelier de l’Île.

    Lighting Solution

Zumtobel ensures unique customer experience and lets designer store shine in new light

Gustav Bruynseraede has fulfilled a lifelong ambition with his single-label boutique on the “Eiermarkt” in the historic centre of the Belgian town of Antwerp. This is where the distinctive collections of the Issey Miyake brand have been exclusively showcased since September 2015. The design of the shop proved to be a major challenge. On the one hand, every aspect of the plans, including the LED lighting solution from Zumtobel, had to meet the strict requirements of the Tokyo-based fashion brand. On the other hand, the issue of historic preservation placed the emphasis firmly on improvisation, as the 300-square-metre venue is housed in a building from the 16th century. No fresh incursions into the ceiling were allowed, so the new luminaires had to be installed in the spaces used for the previous lighting solution.
    More informationLess information
The hard work has definitely paid off for Gustav Bruynseraede. He has always been fascinated by the unique technoid style of Issey Miyake. The Japanese clothing designer and founder of the fashion brand that bears his name is regarded as a true visionary, drawing inspiration from art, architecture and the people he meets. Like no one else before him, Issey Miyake is able to seamlessly combine tradition and innovation, purity and colour, nature and culture, artistic craftwork and advanced technology. Even though he is no longer involved in the day-to-day operational business, Issey Miyake still insists on approving the new designs and defining the brand identity.

    Unique shopping experience
The Issey Miyake store presents itself as a shining jewel from outside. A charming contrast is formed by juxtaposing the historic facade with the straight lines of the glass frontage and the modern passageway that leads through to the courtyard. Purism and transparency dominate the interior. This effect is further enhanced by the custom-made furniture crafted using white concrete and sand-blasted glass. This is where the miniaturised MICROTOOLS modular LED lighting system accentuates specific items and features. Enthralling lighting effects designed to follow a subtle dramatic scheme draw attention to the store, creating a feel-good atmosphere and helping extend the amount of time that the customer is likely to spend browsing.
Even the shop window presents itself as a showroom. Dynamic light with various brightness levels gives the impression that the distinctive Issey Miyake mannequins are actually moving. Each dummy is highlighted by a pair of accent spotlights from the INTRO lighting system, which is fitted flush into the ceiling. One spotlight with a focused distribution and one with floodlight characteristics offer the optimal combination. This vibrant show attracts the attention of passers-by and draws them into the store, where the same staging concept – albeit somewhat less theatrically – puts the "catwalk" mannequins centre stage.

The white frameless driver modules of the INTRO system fit adroitly into the ceiling, helping simultaneously to ensure sufficient general lighting and to focus attention on the latest collections. Here the dramatic effects differ significantly from conventional lighting solutions. The shop is divided into several zones, which use a network of motion sensors to respond interactively to customer movement in the store with subtle changes in the brightness levels. In this way, customers are escorted by gently dynamic light from the entrance all the way through the clearly defined areas of the world of Issey Miyake. A warm welcome is thereby unconsciously conveyed, raising the likelihood of people spending more time in the store and leading to greater consumer enthusiasm.

The design of the four changing rooms, finished off with four round PANOS infinity downlights, invite customers to try on the designer items. The warm-toned ambient lighting is normally dimmed to 50% luminous flux. When a customer enters this area, a motion sensor detects movement and the lighting solution is adjusted accordingly, creating a feel-good atmosphere. The flattering lighting scenario is further enhanced in the hallway area with the mirrored wall. Square PANOS infinity downlights with tunableWhite technology and an EMOTION touch panel were specifically selected to markedly enhance the retail experience. Sales consultants can use the panel to adjust the brightness and colour temperature of the light to suit different items or to show certain pieces of clothing in a particular light. This ensures the natural presentation of materials and colours. In addition, the panel can be used to select a series of pre-programmed scenes for different situations, such as customer events.

    The key to retail success
The consumer experience is playing an increasingly important role when it comes to both achieving success in the retail sector and convincingly expressing a particular brand message. Dutch scientist and artistic engineer Luuk van Laake, founder of the company digiluce, translated store owner Gustav Bruynseraede's initial vision for the lighting arrangement into a conceptual design, crucially adding the element of interaction. This plan was then further refined and finally implemented by the Zumtobel team in Belgium.

It was vitally important to present the materiality and colour of the various collections in an expressive manner – for which the INTRO lighting system with TGRfashion technology is perfectly designed. The LED spotlights are characterised by an exceptionally good colour rendering of Ra = 95, which means that white, bright and also richer hues appear with exceptional quality and brilliance. Contrasting material properties are also clearly differentiated by the TGRfashion spotlights. The added value of this solution is clearly illustrated by comparing original garments displayed in light from TGRfashion technology with those items classically illuminated with a uniform 3000 K colour temperature solution – which immediately impressed shop owner Gustav Bruynseraede.

The LED lighting solution from Zumtobel also scores highly when it comes to energy efficiency and lower heat transfer. Compared to the previous low-voltage halogen installation that Gustav Bruynseraede had used for the former multi-brand XSO designer store, the new lighting solution has a reduction of energy consumption of around 70 percent.. This excellent energy saving potential does not yet even take dimming or factors such as the night-time scene into account, which delivers the same dynamic lighting effects with a lower brightness level, ensuring that the authentic image of the Issey Miyake store is perfectly showcased at all times.

The optimal blend of TGRfashion technology, a dynamic LED lighting solution and outstanding energy efficiency meets the high demands of Issey Miyake and was a key factor in helping Gustav Bruynseraede put his faith in the INTRO, PANOS infinity and MICROTOOLS lighting systems from Zumtobel.

    Lighting Solution

A special addition to the product portfolio

High above the rooftops of Frankfurt shines the bold and purist architecture of the office and conference floor of DVB Bank, awash with high-quality details from a holistic design dominated by glass and a careful blend of white and grey tones. Entrusted with the demanding task of restoring the 40th floor of City-Haus, Frankfurt architects Theiss have created an environment for meetings and conferences that sets a new benchmark for modern working applications. The unusual axis dimensions and reduced installation depth placed special requirements on various features of the project, including a pioneering customised lighting solution that has now been integrated into the standard MIREL evolution product family.
    More informationLess information
Located in the West End district of the German financial capital, the 142-metre-high City-Haus designed by architects Johannes Krahn and Richard Heil was one of the first Frankfurt skyscrapers to be built with a column-free facade structure. DZ Bank has owned this 1970s building on the Platz der Republik for more than 40 years, during which time the high-rise office block has gone through a number of renovation phases. After the illumination of the facade in 2006, it was then the turn of the interior to be gradually updated. The finishing touches to the striking contemporary design concept of the office and conference floor of DVB Bank were added at the end of 2014.

The contract for the ambitious planning assignment was awarded to the Frankfurt-based architects Theiss Planungsgesellschaft mbH, who have earned a burgeoning reputation in recent years in the field of urban planning, construction and interior design– both in the region and beyond. Architect and proprietor Alexander Theiss is a firm advocate of holistic concepts with high flexibility and sustainable design, in which light plays a significant role - core principles that are very much in evidence in the renovated office and conference floor.

The specific focus on building technology and light proved to be an important factor. The lighting solution had to integrate seamlessly with the high-quality design of the conference rooms, offices and a coffee bar, providing an open and welcoming visual appearance. The special axis dimensions of just 1.43 metres and the reduced installation depth offered very precise challenges. The creative idea for the lighting design concept, which also had to comply with the building regulations, could not be realised using a standard solution. As a result, the project team from Zumtobel worked closely with the architects Theiss Planungsgesellschaft to swiftly develop a special luminaire based on the recessed version of MIREL evolution. The combination of low mounting height, excellent system efficiency and high lighting quality immediately convinced both the architect and the end users. The LED technology of MIREL evolution met the energy efficiency requirements, whilst simultaneously offering the optimum conditions for the future-oriented office and conference room architecture.

The glass facade fulfils an important double function, providing fantastic views far beyond the city limits of Frankfurt and allowing plenty of daylight to enter the building. The fusion of white and grey tones with a range of high-quality materials creates a pleasant atmosphere in the conference and meeting rooms. The design language of MIREL evolution and the neutral white light colour further enhance the purist design of this area. Precisely arranged in groups and integrated seamlessly into the office architecture, the luminaire defines the spaces, provides orientation and simultaneously delivers task-specific lighting for deskwork, meetings, presentations and lectures.

Individual LED modules make it possible to create a series of different-sized products using this modified MIREL evolution form. The modular design of the luminaire guarantees flexibility for a variety of functions. In this way, both the elegant lines of this project-specific solution and the new office architecture embody the design philosophy of the architects Theiss Planungsgesellschaft, whilst also meeting the exacting requirements of DVB Bank.

Inspired by the versatility of the customised MIREL product, architects Theiss Planungsgesellschaft and Zumtobel then set about devising a downlight that could be integrated in plasterboard and sheet-steel ceilings. This product palette is complemented by a compact surface-mounted luminaire, ideal for renovation projects where ceiling height constraints prohibit the installation of a false ceiling. With superior design and excellent functionality, this luminaire range lends itself to specification in a wide range of different applications. This project-specific lighting solution shows what can be achieved with a flexible approach and close collaboration. These three exciting new additions mean that the MIREL evolution product portfolio now encompasses yet more pioneering lighting solutions with consistent design language and clearly differentiated functionality.

    MELLOW LIGHT revolutionises workplace lighting

The latest generation of the MELLOW LIGHT LED luminaire has reached a milestone in lighting for modern offices: It offers individually adjustable workplace lighting optimally adjusted to personal needs, and recognises changes in light in the room with the help of sensors. Zumtobel cooperated closely with the Gensler design and architecture firm to develop the luminaire

    More informationLess information
These days employers are increasingly aware that the way a workplace is designed has an effect on the motivation of employees and therefore also on long-term cooperation. Optimal lighting plays a big role here since light has a direct effect on a person's well-being. The approach of placing the focus on people - "Human Centric Lighting" - is therefore having an ever greater say in the development of new lighting solutions. Add to this new research results as well as knowledge gained from the user study of Zumtobel and Fraunhofer IAO, according to which many employees want a greater illuminance and more control over the lighting at their workplace. Being able to individually adjust lighting is therefore an important basis for future-ready solutions. A further challenge for modern office lighting is the changing form of cooperation: Interdisciplinary teams are being used more and more and these require differing lighting set-ups depending on the task and room use. This means that an optimal lighting solution must possess a high level of flexibility and be able to adjust to differing working conditions. Zumtobel is the answer to these changing needs and high demands in the area of office lighting with Active Light – light that adjusts to different circumstances.

With the newly designed MELLOW LIGHT evolution and infinity, Zumtobel has managed to meet these demands with technical precision and bring them in harmony with one another with a uniform design approach. MELLOW LIGHT evolution and infinity is the sixth generation of the MELLOW LIGHT family and marks a further step on the road to perfect office lighting. Working with the Gensler design and architecture, Zumtobel gained a renowned partner with extensive experience in product design to help with the development of the luminaire. "When asked to redefine the Mellow Light, an icon in the world of office lighting, we were not only tasked to author the next chapter in a long history of archetypal Zumtobel design” said designer Daniel Stromborg about the start of the cooperation “but we endeavored to change the way we engage with workplace lighting". The result is an innovative luminaire generation with different design and installation options, e.g. surface-mounted or recessed, in a clear, reduced design language which perfectly complements the previous product family. The three-dimensional shape, the iconic element of earlier luminaires, was consciously retained here – though overall the new MELLOW LIGHT looks sleeker and more elegant. Above all, the design supports a technology which adjusts perfectly to meet the requirements of the workplace.

In light of the fact that most people at the office find the required illuminance of 500 lx to be too little, the new MELLOW LIGHT is set up for an average value of 800 lx. The outer wings of the luminaire are responsible for the indirect portion of light and, depending on the available daylight, ensure a pleasant basic brightness of around 350 Lux in the room. The middle field of the luminaire aims the direct light at the workspace with up to 450 Lux. In its standard option, MELLOW LIGHT evolution, lighting management is limited to one channel, whilst with MELLOW LIGHT infinity the wings and center part of the luminaire can be controlled separately. This is done using the new ATIVO sensor which gives people the right light depending on the occupancy, frequency, and surroundings. For example: during a meeting, one employee leaves his or her seat and changes position in the room to give a presentation. The sensor recognises a presence in a certain sector and automatically activates the right lighting scenario to presentation mode.
Moreover, the luminaire can be individually adjusted to every individual workspace depending on the preferences of the user and the visual task, in combination with a lighting management system such as LITECOM. It is also possible to integrate into the emergency lighting in this way. The latest addition to LITECOM infinity, in the form of "Activity Based Lighting", ensure excellent lighting comfort during differing activities at each office workspace The "Activity Based Lighting" automatically¬ sets the right lighting mood so that the user no longer has to adjust the settings personally, i.e. dimming accordingly for a presentation, discussion or work on a desk.

A further factor that plays an important role in the context of well-being and lighting is the colour temperature. With the help of tunableWhite Technology, MELLOW LIGHT can change the colour temperature throughout the day, thereby supporting the natural rhythm of humans. Two different options are also available for brilliant light quality. advancedOptics, generated with lenses, allows for good glare reduction and contrast-rich light. The lenticular look ensures a homogeneous appearance for the luminaire. With MELLOW LIGHT, Zumtobel is expanding its portfolio not just with a product with a perfected lighting effect and timeless design. The new lighting generation is also making a mark with its variable application possibilities. As a ceiling insert or mounted light in a rectangular or square design, MELLOW LIGHT can be used in loads of work environments. This includes not just office environments with conference rooms and individual offices, but also examination rooms and waiting areas in health care, or classrooms and research spaces in schools.

MELLOW LIGHT will be available from Autumn 2016.

NIGHTSIGHT creates a world of lighting experiences in a night-time cityscape

With the modular LED outdoor lighting system NIGHTSIGHT, Zumtobel offers the opportunity to brighten up outdoor areas and buildings with well thought-out lighting concepts adjusted to suit the needs of people. The comprehensive portfolio allows lighting planners and architects to plan a lighting solution in a universal manner and opens up a whole new realm of creative freedom for them.
    More informationLess information
Modern LED outdoor lighting today takes into account all visual levels in an urban space and is not just limited to a norm-standard level of illuminance to light up those elements of the nocturnal cityscape in focus. Rather, this is about placing emphasis on the needs of people in living spaces at night. It's therefore worth brightening up urban spaces with spherical light components to create centres for human communication, creating visual points of attraction, and improving three-dimensional awareness. Moreover, special architectural features should be highlighted and complex space structures brought to life. This increases recognition value for a region and creates reliable guidance and orientation, even at night. In this way, security and well-being are significantly improved by lighting quality – always without wasting resources or increasing light pollution.

The starting point for such lighting design is always the natural nocturnal situation, the darkness from which the lighting designers design the optimal lighting solution step by step – with only as much light as is necessary. NIGHTSIGHT from Zumtobel as a lighting instrument is predestined to overcome these new challenges For the development of the modular lighting tool, Zumtobel working closely with the designers of Ben van Berkel at UNStudio. The aim here was to create a unique lighting environment, with the help of an adaptive lighting system, which increases social value by taking into consideration human activity and needs in the different phases of the night, and at the same time maintaining the balance between artificial light and darkness.

With NIGHTSIGHT, the experts succeeded in designing a uniform modular product family with a unique look for various applications in urban lighting. The new application encompasses four different formats in a clear, continuous design with a comprehensive portfolio of looks and installation options. In order to both illuminate vertical and horizontal surfaces homogeneously and to set targeted accents, Zumtobel uses two different types of luminaires: perfected for illuminating façades or highlighting architectural details, the projector luminaire with its "darkBeam" look, with LED light points arranged in a special sunken honeycomb structure with their projection lenses meaning side-on glare from the light source is minimised, as are glare effects. Attention is drawn to highlighted objects whilst remaining in the background.

The Area luminaire with a "softGlow" look, on the other hand, improves the lighting of spaces and paths above all. Targeted lighting angles ensure ideal visual comfort by reducing the brightness contrast between the LED light points and the environment. The additional vertical lighting component ultimately offers visual guidances and makes it easier for the eye to adjust the brightness level when entering the illuminated area, thereby reducing sensitivity to glare.

With NIGHTSIGHT, Zumtobel offers lighting designers not just a lighting instrument with a convincing lighting effect and consistent design however, as the outdoor lighting system also makes a mark with its simple installation and maintenance. Installation is particularly easy thanks to the Plug&Play connection. The light heads of the individual LED modules can also be easily adjusted to almost any angle. Moreover, various colour temperatures are also available: options with 3000 K and 4000 K place both the historical old town and a modern skyline in the right light.

Thanks to the targeted use of light and shadow, bright and dark tones, as well as differing light levels, NIGHTSIGHT manages to improve perception of a nocturnal cityscape, highlights special architectural features , creates recognition value, and models spaces – always in harmony with the environment. In this way, both visual comfort and quality of life in an urban outdoor space are improved, whilst the energy consumption of a lighting solution is reduced at the same time.

NIGHTSIGHT will be available from Autumn 2016.

    •    Office: In the area of office lighting, the focus is on people's individual needs while at the same time operating costs need to be reduced. Innovative sensor-controlled luminaires ensure that, depending on the daylight available, the correct amount of artificial lighting is added for specific tasks, thus enhancing the staff's sense of well-being. Thanks to tunableWhite technology, the colour temperature can be adjusted so that the light will stimulate people in the morning and calm them down in the evening. Additional efficiency is ensured by presence detectors dimming down the lighting if nobody is present.

    •    Industry: In industrial applications, light used in a purposeful manner can reduce operating costs and help people perform complex work tasks. Zumtopel has developed the ATIVO sensor to tackle the challenge of combining efficiency and optimum light levels. Whether storage facilities, production areas or open spaces: ATIVO is able to recognise how areas are utilised and thus provide perfect illumination levels for every area in combination with a lighting management system.

    •    Shop & Retail: The use of a target group-specific lighting concept is able to increase sales at the PoS by up to 10%. This was shown in a practical test in the context of the Limbic® Lighting laboratory study. The latest findings and background information will be presented by Zumtobel comprehensively.

    •    Art & Culture: Using daylight efficiently, creating an atmosphere or accents – light for Art & Culture illuminates artworks in a multifaceted manner and at the same time gently and efficiently. Here, the right combination of general lighting, accent lighting and additional wallwashers is decisive. Based on selected lighting tools such as SUPERSYSTEM, Zumtobel will illustrate the aspects that are important for conservational lighting and the presentation of artworks.

    •    Outdoor: This new segment of the Zumtobel portfolio provides new opportunities for task-specific illumination of paths, squares, roads and façades. The portfolio allows lighting designers and architects to develop a consistent lighting solution. Thus, SUPERSYSTEM outdoor allows targeted illumination and presentation of outdoor spaces. The innovative NIGHTSIGHT lighting tool also allows for the first time to implement lighting solutions in a consistent design and with sophisticated technology.

    •    Services: Zumtobel's portfolio also comprises corresponding services offered by the Zumtobel Group. At Light + Building, the Group will give an overview of the services offered, such as the NOW! service package which provides customers with a turnkey lighting solution including an all-round carefree package. In addition, the possibilities of connected lighting in the age of the “Internet of Things” will be displayed.
