“The basic structure of the spotlight consists of a solar disc which is reminiscent of the ancient symbol for the sun complete with a magically lit recessed circular ring. Symbolic form and high technology coalesce into a single unit which uses as few materials as possible and therefore has the smallest possible ecological footprint. This simple design is consistent with closed-loop recycling scenarios. The replaceable optic extends the product‘s service life by making it flexibly adaptable to cope with new lighting tasks. Ancient symbolism and sustainable technologies provide an area of conflicting tensions from which future innovations are born.”

DISCUS EVOLUTION | 32 W
State-of-the-art light sources inspire new peaks of performance
Its delicate but robust design is creatively inspired by cutting-edge LED technology: a flat, minimalist shape with an unmistakable appearance – characterised by the radial fins of the passive heatsink and its illuminated replaceable optic. It fulfils the exacting demands made on sales-promoting accent lighting with dependable accuracy and extremely good colour rendering (Ra 92). The new DISCUS LED-generation Evolution achieves double the luminous flux and efficiency of its predecessor. The luminaire is dimmed on the actual spotlight itself or by DALI control commands, both these methods have a positive impact on energy consumption.

DISCUS LED Evolution
True to the tradition of the patented DISCUS design idiom, the new LED generation is an efficient power package. Delivering up to 2,300 lm of light, DISCUS Evolution LED is a replacement for HIT systems up to 42 W and halogen systems up to 100 W – and saves energy into the bargain. The Evolution series consumes up to 25% less energy than HIT and 68% less than halogen lamps. Investing in a DISCUS LED spotlight pays for itself within no more than 2.5 years.
To ensure differentiated lighting and additional energy savings, the LED spotlight is dimmed directly on the luminaire or by DALI. Flexibly replaceable lens optics make DISCUS Evolution LED a particularly interesting proposition for shops and museums.

DISCUS HIT
If there is a requirement for relatively high lumen packages with good colour rendering, it is advisable to use the compact HIT models rated up to 70 W. The product range is rounded out by an energy saving alternative, a 50 W HIT spotlight. These HIT models extend the range into highly efficient output levels while maintaining the same appearance as DISCUS LED.
Easily installed accessories mounted behind the built-in front ring transform the spotlight into an individual lighting tool for impressive lighting scenarios.

Recessed DISCUS
Their spotlight heads are identical to those of the surface-mounted spotlights. Installation and handling are easy and convenient. A significantly reduced number of components is the result of the minimalist design concept. This in turn increases operational reliability and reduces maintenance effort.
The recessed twin-lamp DISCUS model produces twice the amount of light in a comparatively small space, thus helping ensure an uncluttered ceiling look.

Design
The perfectly matched LED light source and optic enable a new, even flatter and more delicate stylistic idiom that is not feasible using conventional lamps. The minimalist design idiom blends perfectly into many architectures and preserves an uncluttered, purist ceiling look. Thanks to a specially developed mechanism, the absolute flexibility of the spotlight head is retained across all models.
Lens optics
The lens optics are matched to the LED boards and ensure precise light distribution. All four rotationally symmetrical cones of light provide pleasantly smooth lighting thanks to their high degree of uniformity. DISCUS spotlights also feature distinctively high light intensity in the centre with gradual transition towards the edges. The lens optics (described in greater detail on the next page) can be replaced by a few simple movements of the hand without the use of any tools whatsoever.
LED board
The LED board developed by Zumtobel is optimised for efficient, high-quality accent lighting and makes the extremely flat design of the luminaire possible. UV and IR-free light is gentle on the colours of illuminated merchandise. Excellent colour rendering (Ra 92) means that demanding visual tasks can be handled with perfect ease. Special binning ensures very low colour drift (MacAdam 3).
Passive Cooling
Cooling is absolutely crucial for a high-performance LED spotlight. Inadequate cooling reduces both a spotlight‘s light output and service life. With DISCUS, thermal management is an integral part of the design concept. Cooling is passive, functioning with high efficiency according to a chimney effect: cool air is thermally attracted and guided from below through the fins. In the process, the inflowing air conducts excess heat upwards and away from the lighting module. In combination with the perfectly connected spotlight housing made of die-cast aluminium, efficient heat dissipation is achieved with simultaneously compact dimensions.

The LED board and lens optic are perfectly matched and result in a unique optical system. The spotlight‘s spectral and photometric light distribution is characterised by high levels of accuracy, uniformity and intensity.
DISCUS Evolution LED | with oval outline lens, vertical
LED binning | 3000 K and 4000 K
Colour rendering/spectral distribution | total Ra: 92
The DISCUS spotlight achieves an extraordinarily tight colour point tolerance thanks to special binning. The LED spotlight combines a binning of 3 MacAdam ellipses, 1/16 - 2/16 ANSI bin, with good to excellent colour rendering and therefore stands up well in comparison with any conventional system.
Oval
Wideflood 40°
Flood 27°
Spot 17-18°
Four different lens optics (spot, flood, wideflood and oval) in colour temperatures ranging from 3000 K to 4000 K can be replaced quickly without the use of any tools. Thanks to mechanical polarisation, they are simple to fit in the location provided. Light shining between the lenses lends the front panel a useful diffuseness, thus reducing the luminance and ensuring good glare control. Light from the individual LED points is distributed more effectively and perceived as a ring.

DISCUS Evolution LED
The option of dimming opens up new scope for lighting retail areas and exhibition areas: this provides greater empowerment and accuracy because the high-grade LEDs in the DISCUS spotlight maintain a constant colour temperature and colour rendering even when dimmed. LEDs differ from halogen and HIT lamps in this respect.
Two options with a double advantage: the brightness can be adjusted on the actual DISCUS spotlight itself using a rotary switch on the track box or by DALI control commands. Dimming saves energy and makes impressive lighting sceneries possible.
