EMERGENCY LIGHTING  Functional emergency lighting is more than just a must required by law. The quality of the luminaires and of the supply system reflects the operator’s responsibility towards the building, the people using it and towards the environment. Here, quality stands the test, not only in an emergency. ONLITE emergency and escape sign luminaires cannot fail to impress in everyday life – on account of their unobtrusive design and their capability of integration into the interior. For emergency lighting, too, Zumtobel attaches great importance to technical quality criteria such as maximum energy efficiency and convenient maintenance. Based on many years of experience with LED, the ONLITE product range incorporates state-of-the-art, extremely durable LED technology.

DESIGN   “The innovative interplay of lighting technology and design lies behind the development of a new lens system for escape route illumination: ERI – Escape Route Illumination. The crystalline element complies with technical lighting requirements as well as with ergonomic and aesthetic demands.”
“The perfectly illuminated sign is essential for the discreet presence of the escape route symbol, which is either suspended in the room or attached to the wall or ceiling. The design has been further optimised so that the technology is now fully concealed in the wall or ceiling. This concealment makes the escape route signs even less obtrusive. Wherever luminaires appear in a room as objects, particular attention has been paid to minimalism and the perfection of details and their material presence.”

LIGHTING INNOVATION
  • 100 times higher luminance for all escape sign luminaires
  • LEDs with an L80 of 50,000 hours: decrease in luminous flux after 50,000 hours is just 20%
  • Maintenance Function compensates for decrease in luminous flux by automatically increasing the current
  • Escape signs are illuminated perfectly uniformly thanks to special lenses
  • ERI spot: two LED spots with rotating lenses integrate emergency lighting into the escape sign luminaire.
The ERI spot is an energy-efficient LED spot which is combined with a patented lens. This lens focuses 0.5 W light to form incredibly powerful lighting cones, which rotate easily to adapt to any building situation. Specially developed for the PURESIGN 150 and the CROSSIGN 110 and 160 luminaires, this lens also directs the light for optimum escape route illumination. In this way, escape sign and emergency luminaires become one product. In many cases, no extra emergency luminaires are needed.

SUSTAINABILITY     Zumtobel is aware of its responsibility to the environment. Besides identifying products that are particularly sustainable with the eco+ label, Zumtobel is issuing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all its products. This is a quick and easy way of showing customers the environmental impact of a product over its entire service life. EPDs also make a significant contribution towards environmental certification of buildings. By introducing EPDs, Zumtobel has assumed a pioneering role in terms of transparency and is backing up its claim to use resources responsibly.
The life cycle of Zumtobel products
Zumtobel's Life Cycle Assessment is based on International Standard ISO 14 040/44. By means of this generally accepted, reliable tool, the environmental impact of a product is measured and assessed over its entire life cycle – from production of raw materials to recycling.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
EPD is an environmental declaration using LCA and life cycle inventory analysis to assess the use of resources and the environmental impact of a product over its entire life cycle: 90% of energy and resources are consumed when a luminaire is actually used: here, Zumtobel scores high with energy-efficient LED technology and intelligent lighting control.

South Tyrolean mountain sports specialist SALEWA – one of the European market leaders in this sector – relocated its headquarters to Bolzano in late 2011. The design and planning was focused on employees and their needs. The project included, for instance, a crèche and a fitness studio. The buildings and the overall concept were awarded the ClimateHouse Agency's "Work & Life" quality seal in recognition of their environmental, economic and social sustainability.

SALEWA's determination to deal responsibly with individuals, buildings and the environment is also reflected in its decision to opt for premium emergency lighting: PURESIGN LED escape sign luminaires illuminate escape routes and doors in the new buildings in conformity with applicable standards. This luminaire performs two tasks – functioning as both an escape sign and emergency luminaire.

PURESIGN's rotating ERI spot fitted with a patented lens can be adjusted flexibly to suit different spatial requirements. The rectangular RESCLITE wall LED emergency luminaire is the perfect, glare-free solution for staircases that are used as escape routes. The luminaires are powered by an ONLITE central CPS central battery system in order to simplify maintenance and monitoring.

Reykjavik University
Reykjavik, Iceland
Architect: Henning Larsen Architects, Copenhagen (DK); ARKIS Architects, Reykjavik (IS)
Lighting design: VERKIS, Reykjavik (IS)
Electrical installations: Rafmiolum hf, Reykjavik (IS)
Reykjavik University has become a new top-class facility for research and technology. This modern campus, designed jointly with Copenhagen architects Henning Larsen and Reykjavik-based ARKIS, makes the most possible use of natural daylight. Nevertheless, given the northerly location of the campus (at a latitude of 64°, i.e. 269 km south of the Arctic Circle), artificial lighting and intelligent lighting control are also crucially important.

Emergency lighting systems servicing spacious areas across several buildings and premises demand considerable know-how. The LED emergency luminaires from Zumtobel's ONLITE product range used on the campus, are reliably powered by an ONLITE central CPS system in the event of a power failure. This combination ensures functionality, efficiency and cost effectiveness in equal measures.

Zumtobel's ONLITE central CPS central battery system proved to be an affordable, highly functional solution. Among other benefits, defective emergency or escape sign luminaires can be pinpointed and maintained quickly and easily via the central control system. Due to its modular design, the ONLITE central CPS system makes it possible to develop a bespoke solution that delivers optimal functionality and cost for any project.

LED emergency and escape sign luminaires from the ONLITE product range illuminate indoor and outdoor escape routes at the university reliably, efficiently and conform with all applicable standards. Rotating ERI spots fitted with a patented lens, take over the functions of both escape sign and emergency luminaires. Due to their simplistic design, ERI spots blend unobtrusively into their surroundings. The University of Reykjavik's solution demonstrates Zumtobel's emergency lighting know-how and reliability.

UŠĆE SHOPPING CENTER
Belgrade, Serbia
Owner: UŠĆE Shopping Centre d.o.o., Belgrade (SRB)

The attractions of Serbia's biggest shopping centre in the capital Belgrade draw in up to 140,000 visitors a day. Visitors have a choice of 140 shops selling most major international brands and fashion labels, many cafés and restaurants, a multiplex cinema with 11 theatres, bowling alleys and amusement arcades, and, last but not least, a supermarket covering an area of 4,000 m2.

Safety is a paramount concern in public buildings like this and is ensured by a whole raft of standards and regulations. These standards and regulations also apply to emergency lighting. The quality of emergency lighting is about more than just how it responds when there is a power failure, it is about how it performs during normal operation hours – in terms of aspects such as energy efficiency, simple maintenance and appealing design, for example.

Zumtobel's emergency lighting meets all these criteria and also gets top marks by blending seamlessly into the shopping centre's architecture: the ARTSIGN, COMSIGN and PURESIGN escape sign luminaires from the ONLITE product range have a simplistic design that enables them to blend unobtrusively into their surroundings. Thanks to ERI spots with their patented lenses, the PURESIGN luminaires are able to do the job of an escape sign luminaire, as well as, an emergency luminaire. Their pictographs are designed in accordance with international Standard ISO 7010, which has already been harmonised in many European countries. This means that ONLITE escape sign luminaires are future-fit.

ONLITE local Controller SB 128 ensures maintenance reliability in the Belgrade shopping centre: the locally monitored system performs all checking tasks and thus provides maximum functional safety at minimum cost. Safety-relevant tests over and above those required by applicable standards are performed automatically and any failures are reported immediately.

Zumtobel's lighting solution in Vodafone's Ivrea (Italy) branch passed its trials with flying colours. The world's second-largest telecommunications provider is now able to depend on Zumtobel’s quality and experience at its new company headquarters in Milan.

The Vodafone Village consists of three linked buildings covering an area of over 67,000 m², which now boast an all-embracing lighting solution. This solution stands out thanks to its energy efficiency and minimal maintenance costs; it also meets high standards in terms of aesthetics, lighting quality and safety.

In particular, designing the emergency lighting systems installed in such spacious areas was no easy feat. This was due to the practical challenges of implementation, as well as, the wide variety of national and international standards and regulations that had to be met. Zumtobel's expertise and many years of experience delivered the kind of expert consulting and innovative solution that are needed to accomplish a demanding project like this.

Zumtobel's ONLITE product range includes an extremely diverse amount of emergency and escape sign luminaires, making it possible to devise a special-purpose solution for each individual area: from the seemingly floating COMSIGN escape sign luminaire in the office areas and the discreet ARTSIGN model in the auditorium, through to the innovative wall and ceiling- mounted RESCLITE emergency luminaires used in the foyer. RESCLITE – fitted with four different optics – excels with its exceptional efficiency and ideal light distribution along the escape route. This makes it possible to realise emergency lighting in conformity with applicable standards using just a few luminaires.
