The German Design Award, the premium prize awarded by the German Design Council, is awarded for the fourth time this year. Awards are granted to high-calibre products and projects as well as their manufacturers and designers, who are pioneers in the German and international design scene. “Being honoured with the German Design Award acknowledges our ambitions to develop products and lighting solutions of superior design quality that provide the user with true added value,” says Stefan von Terzi, Zumtobel Marketing Director. “With LIGHT FIELDS we have managed to develop a product range that combines architectural design and cutting-edge technologies in one lighting solution.” The prizes will be awarded in Frankfurt on 13 February 2015.

An overview of the award-winning products:

LIGHT FIELDS evolution: LED luminaire range for sophisticated lighting projects
The » LIGHT FIELDS evolution LED luminaire range designed by British industrial designer Christopher Redfern from Sottsass Associati combines straightforward design with innovation. Thanks to their uniformly slim-line design, narrow mounting height and high-grade materials, the luminaires blend perfectly into contemporary office interiors. However, LIGHT FIELDS evolution is impressive not only in visual terms but also in terms of technical features: innovative technologies have been incorporated in the various luminaire models. For the recessed and surface-mounted luminaires, Zumtobel has developed the 3Dprotect® reflector. Its 3D structure protects the LED modules during installation, preventing damage from electrostatic discharge. At the same time, the structure's reflection factor ensures an increase in the luminaire efficiency level. The free-standing, wall-mounted and pendant luminaires are fitted with innovative litePrint® waveguide technology, so that the light source remains concealed despite the luminaire's minimum height and delicate frame. This means that the high luminance of the individual LED lighting points is resolved perfectly. Thanks to the highly effective micro-pyramidal optic (MPO+), all LIGHT FIELDS evolution models feature optimum glare control and maximum lighting quality at all times in a variety of working situations.

CRAFT: efficient and targeted high-bay LED lighting
The » CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire is the result of a joint development project by Zumtobel and Arup. CRAFT provides high luminous flux levels of up to 28,000 lumens for lighting tasks in industrial areas; innovative lens technology allows for high-precision light control. The luminaire features square and narrow-beam lighting characteristics to perform a variety of lighting tasks; the lighting solution's uniformity and efficiency are significantly improved as the luminous fields do not overlap. A special design feature, the rib structure, ensures cooling and cleaning on account of the airflow, which significantly increases the LED's service life.

SEQUENCE: adaptive, pinpoint task area lighting
The » SEQUENCE LED luminaire offers an optimum combination of direct and indirect lighting and boasts modules than can be individually controlled. Thus, the luminaire meets the various requirements of employees with respect to ideal office lighting as well as the need for customisation to the utmost degree. SEQUENCE has been designed as a pendant and surface-mounted luminaire and consists of 8 or 14 module units arranged alongside each other, each with 6 x 3 centrally arranged LED light points. Thanks to an opal cover frame, the 24 outer LEDs provide diffuse ambient light as well as an altogether softer light distribution. Besides this exceptional performance feature, SEQUENCE, thanks to its flat aluminium housing, boasts an especially slim shape that blends perfectly into any interior design. The luminaire's sophisticated design – all its electronic components are almost invisibly enclosed in a slightly raised area on the top of the luminaire unit – ensures a delicate appearance.

Nobel Prize in Physics goes to LED scientists

On 7 October 2014, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics were announced in Stockholm. The winners, the three Japanese scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, are regarded as the inventors of the blue light-emitting diodes. On the occasion of this announcement, Klaus Vamberszky, Executive Vice President Zumtobel Group Technology, comments on the importance of LED technology at Zumtobel.
    More informationLess information
"We are very pleased about the Nobel Prize Committee's decision. In this way, the importance of semiconductor physics for lighting has been honoured appropriately. Only the blue LED has made LED technology relevant for general lighting, for applications beyond display indicators. All LED applications we see in contemporary lighting industry are based on this invention.

Today, LEDs are already widely spread in the market. Within the Zumtobel Group, the LED segment meanwhile accounts for 43% of consolidated revenues, at unbridled dynamic growth. At the lab, LEDs are already achieving efficiency levels of up to 200 lumens per watt – which is twice the efficiency of conventional fluorescent lamps. In terms of energy efficiency, the potential of LEDs in many application areas is far from being exhausted. In aesthetic terms, too, the LED provides huge benefits. It is "every architect's dream": compact, configurable in shape and design as required, durable and sturdy, dimmable and controllable, and it allows to create the most varied lighting scenes," explains Klaus Vamberszky, Executive Vice President Zumtobel Group Technology, on the occasion of the announcement of this year's winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Like every year, the prize awarding ceremony will take place on 10 December. Congratulations from Zumtobel to the winners!

Studio Tamassociati wins Zumtobel Group Award 2014 in the Buildings category

The international expert jury of the Zumtobel Group Award 2014 has chosen projects by Arup Germany, Studio Tamassociati Italy and Elemental Chile to each win the first prize in their category.
    More informationLess information
On 22 September 2014, jury chairman Winy Maas announced the prize-winning projects of the fourth Zumtobel Group Award, which was once again curated by the Berlin Aedes Architecure Forum. The Zumtobel Group had made a call for the Zumtobel Group Award promoting innovation in terms of sustainability and quality of life in the built environment in three categories: Applied Innovations, Buildings, and Urban Developments & Initiatives. From a total of 356 projects submitted, the jury had nominated 15 projects.

“The decision to select the winner was a very close one for all three categories, since we were able to choose from a large number of heterogeneous high-quality projects. This year, an important criterion for the jury was the “innovation” factor, both in terms of technology and with a view to design and participation processes as well as environmental and social challenges,” says Winy Maas, chairman of the jury.

    “Buildings” category represented by Zumtobel
In the “Buildings” category sponsored by Zumtobel, the first prize was awarded to the Venice-based architects of Studio Tamassociati, who were chosen from a total of 146 projects submitted. In this category, outstanding building projects completed within the last two years (from 30 November 2011 to 30 November 2013) could be submitted.

Award goes to children's hospital in Sudan
On behalf of the Italian “Emergency” relief organisation that provides free medical treatment to victims of war, land mines and poverty, a children's hospital was built in Sudan. The hospital situated in the strategically important city of Port Sudan is one of the few locations where free medical treatment for children is available. In view of the extreme conditions prevailing on site – in particular as regards the hot desert climate and the country's political instability – what was called for was simplicity in design. The architects combined old and new technologies and developed a system that takes cooling, waste air treatment, recycling, redistribution of local materials, landscape design and energy savings into account. In order to clean the hospital's waste water, a public garden was set out. This garden – the only public garden in the neighbourhood – is an important element in the patients' recovery.

What benefits do I get from Zumtobel Limbic® Lighting?

Light is an effective marketing tool. It has the ability to address target groups and differentiate brands. The Limbic® Lighting study provides for the first time solid evicence for developing a target group-specific lighting solution.
    More informationLess information
By changing intensity, contrast, colour, colour temperature, direction and uniformity, the light responds to current trends and emotional needs. A perfect lighting solution stimulates the target group. Prolonged time spent in the shop will increase sales prospects. Once a target group-specific concept has been successfully implemented, it can be multiplied for local or global brand rollout on the basis of design guidelines.

“Never before has anybody realised that light is the decisive marketing factor, which I perceive as being of huge potential,” says Dr. Hans-Georg Häusel of Gruppe Nymphenburg. Jointly with Nicole Schweitzer, he has recorded six videos providing information about the Limbic® Lighting study conducted by Zumtobel in collaboration with Gruppe Nymphenburg.

The findings of this study will help to develop lighting concepts for retail, so that the potential mentioned by Häusel can be used for presenting goods to optimum effect and increasing the customers' sense of well-being, thus making them stay in the shop longer.

Olafur Eliasson uses CRAFT by Zumtobel in his new exhibition

In his first solo exhibition, Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson dissolves the boundary between nature and man-made art.
    More informationLess information
In his "Riverbed" exhibition, Eliasson forces the power of nature into built environment, turning architecture – in the form of the Louisiana Museum in Denmark – into an arena of the forces of nature: in a huge rock installation, a riverbed runs through the south wing of the museum located at the Öresund.

Thus, Eliasson overrides the definition of art, nature, indoors and outdoors, taking the elements of water, soil and rock to the inside. This makes people loose the safety provided by built environment. Moreover, the boundaries between day and night are dissolved by "Riverbed", as there is always daytime.

In this way, the artificial presentation of nature is not subject to the changes of time. For this play with illusion, Olafur Eliasson has used a lighting solution by Zumtobel.

The » CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire, concealed behind a fixed screen, has been installed like a grid above the phenomenal nature setting. Without creating any shadows, diffuse bright light similar to daylight does away with the temporal dimension of day and night.

» The "Riverbed" exhibition will be on display until 4 January 2015 at the Louisiana Museum.

    More informationLess information
Since 1975, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has presented the European Shopping Centre Awards to honour the best new and refurbished shopping centres in Europe.

This year, the Centrum Cerný Most shopping centre in Prague has won the renowned award in the “Refurbishment and/or Expansion” category. Centrum Černý Most was opened in 1997 as the first shopping centre in the Czech Republic and has since been extended and modernised several times, culminating in the overall refurbishment completed in March 2013. On a floor space of 82,000 m², the shopping centre offers a broad range of sports products, clothing, entertainment and restaurants.

In addition to the attractive brand portfolio and superior services available, the jury chaired by Jan Eijkemans (MAB Development) appreciated above all the shopping centre's unique architectural design as well as its lighting design developed by NDY Light.

Having been involved in the project from an early stage on, Zumtobel impressively demonstrated how to meet the high demands of the Benoy architects' studio in terms of façade lighting. Ever-changing animations are visible on the unique interactive façade to attract new visitors, while the building's outlines are highlighted by HILIO LED light lines.

For controlling the lighting management throughout the shopping centre, three different protocols (DMX, 1-10 V, DALI) are used. The LUXMATE lighting management system allows control of all luminaires in the entire shopping centre from one central control point, where the lighting scenarios for the interactive façade can be created as well.

Inside the building, PANOS infinity LED downlights are used, providing optimum lighting quality at maximum efficiency levels. The ONLITE emergency lighting system ensures safety in case of emergencies.

Integral approach for biologically effective lighting solutions in health and care applications

Due to milestones in technology such as LEDs and new scientific findings, lighting experts are facing completely new challenges in the 21st century. The biological effects of lighting are a new and future-oriented issue. However, ultimately, the emotional aspects of light play a highly decisive role in care facilities as well.
    More informationLess information
Body and mind are closely interrelated and must be treated as a unit, as doctors and care practitioners know. Responsible implementation of DIN SPEC 67600 04-2013 “Biologically effective illumination – Design guidelines” must be based on an integral approach that takes the visual, emotional and biological effects of lighting on individuals into account.

Three aspects need to be considered:
    1) Artificial lighting should simulate natural changes over the course of the day as a supplement
         to daylight.

    2) An essential prerequisite of successful lighting solutions is the option of being able to adjust
lighting conditions individually. In view of the fact that light has an impact on physiological
functions, individual control options are a must.

    3) The emotional and biological effects of lighting are included in the design approach in a
well-balanced manner. On the one hand, the right amount of light at the right time, in an intense
bluish light colour, for example, has a biologically supporting effect. On the other hand, a high
Kelvin level may be perceived as annoying or unappealing, depending on individual
preferences, the weather situation or visual/spatial tasks.

    Fundamental principles
The ganglion cells in the retina which contain the photopigment melanopsin are considered the interface to the non-visual biological effects of light. They are widely spread across the lower part of the retina and very sensitive in the spectral area around 490 nm (bluish green). Therefore, bluish light has meanwhile become synonymous with the biological effects of light in the industry. There is no doubt that many LED spectral distributions allow successful argumentation approaches. However, other influencing parameters are frequently neglected. For instance, vertical illuminance on the eye or wide-area luminance levels emitted directly from above (for other parameters, see table).

    Extract from DIN SPEC 67600:2013-04

More intense biological effects of light are produced by Less intense biological effects of light are produced by
Higher level of radiation Lower level of radiation
Longer duration of exposure Shorter duration of exposure
Higher level of blue components Lower level of blue components
    Wide-area lighting Pinpoint lighting
Dynamic changes in lighting Constant lighting
Lower level of radiation before the light exposure under review*
Morning light is most effective for synchronising the body clock Light in the afternoon affects the body clock to a relatively low extent

    * Persons who have been adjusted to darkness for an extended period before being exposed to light will be more sensitive to light and show a stronger response

Lighting solutions for the elderlyLighting solutions for the elderly
The probability of requiring a hospital stay or having to live in a care facility increases with age. Physical restrictions and the staff's time pressure put a limit to the time spent outdoors. This may have fatal consequences, since above all in old age, extended exposure to light is required due to changes in the circadian system. Lighting solutions boasting melanopic effects improve sleep and hence also enhance people's mental performance and emotional state.
Age-related clouding of the lens of the eye has a negative impact on the biological effects of lighting, since less light reaches the retina. In particular the spectral component with high melanopic effectiveness in the area of bluish green is affected by the yellowish clouding of the lens, so that the body clock will increasingly get out of balance. The release of hormones, too, such as for instance melatonin, which is produced at night, does no longer work as it does in younger people.

Dementia becomes more common with old age. It is associated with a high level of desynchronisation and night-time phases of activity related with it. For most family members, their own lack of sleep sooner or later results in giving up home care and deciding in favour of a care facility. More time spent outdoors and sufficient illumination of living spaces may have an extremely positive impact and ensure long-term care in the familiar residential environment.

Even in case of elderly people in need of care, an integral approach must not be overlooked. The visual system is supported by higher illuminance levels, as vision deteriorates and serious eye diseases become more common with age. An important emotional aspect with dementia patients concerns anxiety. Mental delusions such as alleged persecutors are reduced by avoiding reflections or by softening shadows.

    Application in hospitalsApplication in hospitals
Primarily, the hospital layout must be designed so as to allow people to follow their natural rhythm of life in an unfamiliar environment. Large windows are essential. Only where an insufficient amount of daylight is available is additional support by artificial lighting solutions required. In the patient rooms, the SINUS supply unit is able to meet the needs of patients and staff. Tunable White (adjustment of light colour and quantity) is the appropriate technological tool for ensuring synchronisation and short-term biological effects influencing activation or resting processes. The lighting management system combines artificial lighting control with changes in daylight and may even simulate sunrise. Thus, the patients are gently awakened by light. Due to this aspect alone, we may anticipate a positive impact on sleep and improvement of the mood (keyword: dawn simulation).

For emotional reasons, intensely bluish light should be used cautiously only, for natural skin tones will appear pale under this spectrum. This may be a problem especially for sick people and their communication partners.

Biologically effective lighting solutions support doctors and nurses in their work, above all at night. The health risks of shift working are well-known. The human circadian system with its complex hormonal processes must therefore be treated with utmost sensitivity. Performance can be enhanced by inhibition of the “sleep hormone” melatonin. This process must not become a rigid technological guideline. Rather, optional controls will grant the staff freedom to expose themselves to a biologically effective amount of light or even switch the lights completely off, if required – whether in nurses' rooms, corridors or surgical preparation rooms. Under these conditions, the sleep of the staff working at the Karolinska Hospital in Huddinge (SE) has become more restful; they feel more alert and active during their work.

Application in care facilitiesApplication in care facilities
The aspects to be considered when it comes to lighting in sleeping/living rooms or bathrooms are similar to residential lighting. An example: in the evening, exposure should be restricted to low amounts of reddish light with low melanopic effectiveness, so that melatonin production will not be disrupted. By day, biological effects will mainly be provided by natural daylight entering through the windows or during outdoor stays. Poor supply of natural light in a room may be supplemented by additional artificial lighting solutions. Zumtobel's Tunable White product ranges, such as for example ONDARIA or MELLOW LIGHT V, combined with lighting management systems, are ideal for this purpose. Above all in lounge areas including corridors, a highly beneficial impact on care home resident's quality of life was demonstrated. Participation in social activities increases after installation of a biologically effective lighting solution, communication is improved, sleep is enhanced, lower doses of medication are required. All this contributes to improving the residents' quality of life (» St. Katharina study, Vienna).

    Lighting Solution

Two projects representing Zumtobel at Luminale 2014

The Luminale festival is the Biennale of Lighting Culture and will be held already for the seventh time concurrently with light+building, the international architecture show, from 30 March to 4 April 2014 in Frankfurt am Main. This year, even two projects will be presented that create lighting experiences supported by Zumtobel.

Cornea Ti – morphing light to space
Cornea Ti, the lighting installation created by students of the bachelor degree programme in interior design at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, will be located on a container boat near Untermainbrücke. In a world of data encryption and encoding, the installation visualises illusion and reality of a message, creating a bridge into our information age.

At twilight, 1600 video-compatible Capix LED façade luminaires by Zumtobel turn the installation to life, ensuring an interactive spatial experience for visitors. The secret of Cornea Ti is an anagram – a new word is produced by rearranging its letters. While visitors walk through the installation, the transformed letters will produce a word the real meaning of which has to be deciphered.

In the process, the LED pixels are individually controlled in real time via a PC and animated as a system responding to movement in the space. In this way, visitors are accompanied by interactive light on their way through a world of letters, creating a personal experience of space. The lighting installation is accompanied by music. Every night, live concerts will be held in collaboration with musicians from HfMDK Frankfurt and Ensemble Modern, indulging visitors in a unique light and sound installation.

    Twinkle Twinkle
A second installation sponsored by Zumtobel can be found on the square in front of the Deutsche Bank Towers. Consisting of 576 prism poles made of glass, the Twinkle Twinkle installation is a transparent and dynamic structure that reflects daylight and its surroundings, creating an enthralling experience for visitors. Daylight is refracted by the prism poles, which produce lighting-like reflections fanning out into a fascinating colour spectrum.

In daylight, the sculpture appears scarcely palpable; at night, 18 Elevo RGB DMX façade luminaires set the four-metre concentric structure aglow. The special lighting presentation creates a dramatic effect, which is enhanced by background music.  Twinkle Twinkle is a project by Glasbau-Hahn GmbH, NE-AR Nixdorff Etchegorry – Architecture Research, lichtundsoehne – lighting & visual design, O-S-D – office for structural design and studioheyhey – visual communication.

At this year's light+building, Zumtobel – as an expert in the field of interior lighting for commercial purposes – will also present an extensive product range for façade & architecture applications. Providing smart, resource-conserving illumination for façades based on cutting-edge LED technology, Zumtobel meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

    New DIMLITE design Web app

In addition to the iPad app already available, the DIMLITE configurator is now also available as a Web app, so that it can be used with all Web-enabled devices.
    More informationLess information
DIMLITE is the ideal first step into the world of intelligent lighting management. The corresponding Zumtobel DIMLITE Web app is a free and easy-to-use design tool for electricians and electrical consultants.

DIMLITE, a simple lighting control system for individual rooms, was developed to facilitate the first step into lighting management, providing core functions such as dimming, lighting scenes, presence-based and daylight-based lighting management.

The free Zumtobel DIMLITE Web app quickly provides answers to questions such as:
    •    How do I meet the room user's lighting demands?
    •    Which control unit is appropriate for my purpose?
    •    How do I connect the individual components?

As a result, the DIMLITE app produces a pdf file that includes the schematic circuit diagram and a parts list. Only a few steps are necessary to obtain this file:

    1. Select the number of lluminaires per group and control signal (DALI or DSI).

    2. Specify whether the component is to be installed in a switch cabinet or recessed into the ceiling (depends on the number of luminaire groups).

    3. Is daylight-based lighting management required?

Energy labels now available as pdf in the online product catalogue

With immediate effect, Zumtobel is making the labels indicating the energy-efficiency classes of the lamps and LED modules to be used for a luminaire in compliance with EU Regulation 874/2012 available for download in the product catalogue. Thus, Zumtobel helps consumers with their buying decisions, as the light source's energy efficiency class and its weighted energy consumption are made transparent even beyond the scope of EU Regulation requirements.
    More informationLess information
With effect from 1 September 2013, the requirements of the new EU Regulation 874/2012 with regard to “energy labelling of electrical lamps and luminaires” have entered into force. As a consequence, lamp manufacturers and manufacturers of luminaires that are sold to end users have to publish information about the efficiency and annual energy consumption of the lamps and LED modules concerned. The new regulation also applies to luminaires with built-in LED modules.

What is new, among other things, are the changes in classification of labels and the “label for luminaires”, which provides information about

    •    the luminaire's compatibility with lamps and about built-in LED modules

    •    the range of possible energy efficiency classes (EEC)

    •    the EEC of lamps (and LED modules) supplied with the luminaire

Please note: the label for luminaires does not include any information on the efficiency of the luminaire itself.

The label for luminaires is now available for download as pdf in the right marginal column at the product level in Zumtobel's online product catalogue.

You will, for instance, find the luminaire label for LIGHT FIELDS evolution in the right marginal column at the following link: » http://www.zumtobel.com/42181890

Zumtobel Limbic® Lighting at EuroShop 2014

At EuroShop 2014, which was held in Duesseldorf from 16 to 20 February, Zumtobel presented the findings of a new study which identifies the emotional responses of people to various lighting scenarios in a shop on an empirical basis. The findings of this study carried out by Zumtobel and Gruppe Nymphenburg will lead to the development of retail lighting concepts that provide for perfect presentation of goods and increase the customers' sense of well-being.
    More informationLess information
The question of which lighting parameters, in a retail context, possess the greatest effect, and which lighting scenarios have a positive impact on people's emotional perception had so far not been investigated. The Limbic® Lighting study shows clear differences with respect to lighting preferences. Target groups respond in different ways to even the smallest changes hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Accordingly, adjusting the lighting scenarios to target group-specific needs is explicitly recommended.

Based on this study, Zumtobel has been able to identify three focuses – with fundamental differences in terms of lighting design and clearly different vistas. The findings obtained clearly show that each individual target group can be addressed to optimum effect.

CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire wins “Design Plus powered by light+building” award

This award is presented for special achievements in terms of design, environmental compatibility and technology.
    More informationLess information
The CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire has won the “Design Plus powered by light+building” award.

All products submitted were evaluated by an expert jury according to the following criteria:
    •    Design: quality of design, choice of materials, user-friendliness (universal design)
    •    Environmental aspects: energy efficiency, sustainability (use of resources), service life
    •    Technology: innovation, function, technological quality, capability of integration

    CRAFT – worthy of distinction
With a luminous flux level of up to 28.000 lumens, CRAFT is a top performer in industrial lighting: thanks to innovative lens technology, CRAFT provides high-precision direction of light for models with square or narrow-beam light distribution. Luminous fields that do not overlap create significant extra uniformity and efficiency for any lighting solution. Thus, a lower number of luminaires are required, and investment costs are significantly reduced.

Moreover, the luminaire is available in intermediate (4000 K/CRI 80/88 lm/W) or cool white (6500 K/CRI 70/100 lm/W), qualifying it for nearly any challenge – no matter whether in warehouses, manufacturing bays or workshops. Another asset is that CRAFT is DALI-dimmable as standard and requires little maintenance. The high-bay LED luminaire is therefore perfectly prepared for use with lighting management systems, ensuring maximum energy and CO2 savings.

The new building will allow further growth in the sphere of LED technology as well as optimisation of processes within the factory. A total of 10,000 square metres have been added to the factory, subdivided into 2,000 square metres of office space and 8,000 square metres of production space.

LED lens manufacture as core competence of the future
One of the core competencies to be further expanded at the Dornbirn site is the manufacture of LED lenses. To this end, about EUR one million were invested in injection-moulding machines that will be put into operation in the new factory hall this spring. The aim is to strengthen Zumtobel's leadership in the segment of lens manufacture.

Moreover, the fitting of LED boards, or SMD configurations, will be accommodated in “Hall 7”. Workstations for assembling LED luminaires will also be relocated to the new hall. At present, the share of LED products at the Dornbirn site amounts to 31 percent; this number is to be increased to 40 percent in the next financial year.

    Efficient LED lighting
The new factory hall is illuminated exclusively by LED luminaires made by Zumtobel. On the ground floor, for instance, CRAFT LED high-bay luminaires have been installed. Zumtobel opted for the TECTON LED continuous-row lighting system to be installed in the basement. Already during planning of the hall, special emphasis was placed on optimum utilisation of natural daylight. “As a lighting group, it is a matter of course for us to provide our staff members with efficient, perfect illumination. At the same time, the factory hall with its lighting solution is a great showroom for customers from all over the world, who visit our site to attend training courses,” says Herwig Burtscher, manager of the plant.
