    More informationLess information
The German Design Award, the premium prize awarded by the German Design Council, is awarded for the fourth time this year. Awards are granted to high-calibre products and projects as well as their manufacturers and designers, who are pioneers in the German and international design scene. “Being honoured with the German Design Award acknowledges our ambitions to develop products and lighting solutions of superior design quality that provide the user with true added value,” says Stefan von Terzi, Zumtobel Marketing Director. “With LIGHT FIELDS we have managed to develop a product range that combines architectural design and cutting-edge technologies in one lighting solution.” The prizes will be awarded in Frankfurt on 13 February 2015.

An overview of the award-winning products:

LIGHT FIELDS evolution: LED luminaire range for sophisticated lighting projects
The » LIGHT FIELDS evolution LED luminaire range designed by British industrial designer Christopher Redfern from Sottsass Associati combines straightforward design with innovation. Thanks to their uniformly slim-line design, narrow mounting height and high-grade materials, the luminaires blend perfectly into contemporary office interiors. However, LIGHT FIELDS evolution is impressive not only in visual terms but also in terms of technical features: innovative technologies have been incorporated in the various luminaire models. For the recessed and surface-mounted luminaires, Zumtobel has developed the 3Dprotect® reflector. Its 3D structure protects the LED modules during installation, preventing damage from electrostatic discharge. At the same time, the structure's reflection factor ensures an increase in the luminaire efficiency level. The free-standing, wall-mounted and pendant luminaires are fitted with innovative litePrint® waveguide technology, so that the light source remains concealed despite the luminaire's minimum height and delicate frame. This means that the high luminance of the individual LED lighting points is resolved perfectly. Thanks to the highly effective micro-pyramidal optic (MPO+), all LIGHT FIELDS evolution models feature optimum glare control and maximum lighting quality at all times in a variety of working situations.

CRAFT: efficient and targeted high-bay LED lighting
The » CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire is the result of a joint development project by Zumtobel and Arup. CRAFT provides high luminous flux levels of up to 28,000 lumens for lighting tasks in industrial areas; innovative lens technology allows for high-precision light control. The luminaire features square and narrow-beam lighting characteristics to perform a variety of lighting tasks; the lighting solution's uniformity and efficiency are significantly improved as the luminous fields do not overlap. A special design feature, the rib structure, ensures cooling and cleaning on account of the airflow, which significantly increases the LED's service life.

SEQUENCE: adaptive, pinpoint task area lighting
The » SEQUENCE LED luminaire offers an optimum combination of direct and indirect lighting and boasts modules than can be individually controlled. Thus, the luminaire meets the various requirements of employees with respect to ideal office lighting as well as the need for customisation to the utmost degree. SEQUENCE has been designed as a pendant and surface-mounted luminaire and consists of 8 or 14 module units arranged alongside each other, each with 6 x 3 centrally arranged LED light points. Thanks to an opal cover frame, the 24 outer LEDs provide diffuse ambient light as well as an altogether softer light distribution. Besides this exceptional performance feature, SEQUENCE, thanks to its flat aluminium housing, boasts an especially slim shape that blends perfectly into any interior design. The luminaire's sophisticated design – all its electronic components are almost invisibly enclosed in a slightly raised area on the top of the luminaire unit – ensures a delicate appearance.

Nobel Prize in Physics goes to LED scientists

On 7 October 2014, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics were announced in Stockholm. The winners, the three Japanese scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, are regarded as the inventors of the blue light-emitting diodes. On the occasion of this announcement, Klaus Vamberszky, Executive Vice President Zumtobel Group Technology, comments on the importance of LED technology at Zumtobel.
    More informationLess information
"We are very pleased about the Nobel Prize Committee's decision. In this way, the importance of semiconductor physics for lighting has been honoured appropriately. Only the blue LED has made LED technology relevant for general lighting, for applications beyond display indicators. All LED applications we see in contemporary lighting industry are based on this invention.

Today, LEDs are already widely spread in the market. Within the Zumtobel Group, the LED segment meanwhile accounts for 43% of consolidated revenues, at unbridled dynamic growth. At the lab, LEDs are already achieving efficiency levels of up to 200 lumens per watt – which is twice the efficiency of conventional fluorescent lamps. In terms of energy efficiency, the potential of LEDs in many application areas is far from being exhausted. In aesthetic terms, too, the LED provides huge benefits. It is "every architect's dream": compact, configurable in shape and design as required, durable and sturdy, dimmable and controllable, and it allows to create the most varied lighting scenes," explains Klaus Vamberszky, Executive Vice President Zumtobel Group Technology, on the occasion of the announcement of this year's winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Like every year, the prize awarding ceremony will take place on 10 December. Congratulations from Zumtobel to the winners!

Studio Tamassociati wins Zumtobel Group Award 2014 in the Buildings category

The international expert jury of the Zumtobel Group Award 2014 has chosen projects by Arup Germany, Studio Tamassociati Italy and Elemental Chile to each win the first prize in their category.
    More informationLess information
On 22 September 2014, jury chairman Winy Maas announced the prize-winning projects of the fourth Zumtobel Group Award, which was once again curated by the Berlin Aedes Architecure Forum. The Zumtobel Group had made a call for the Zumtobel Group Award promoting innovation in terms of sustainability and quality of life in the built environment in three categories: Applied Innovations, Buildings, and Urban Developments & Initiatives. From a total of 356 projects submitted, the jury had nominated 15 projects.

“The decision to select the winner was a very close one for all three categories, since we were able to choose from a large number of heterogeneous high-quality projects. This year, an important criterion for the jury was the “innovation” factor, both in terms of technology and with a view to design and participation processes as well as environmental and social challenges,” says Winy Maas, chairman of the jury.

    “Buildings” category represented by Zumtobel
In the “Buildings” category sponsored by Zumtobel, the first prize was awarded to the Venice-based architects of Studio Tamassociati, who were chosen from a total of 146 projects submitted. In this category, outstanding building projects completed within the last two years (from 30 November 2011 to 30 November 2013) could be submitted.

Award goes to children's hospital in Sudan
On behalf of the Italian “Emergency” relief organisation that provides free medical treatment to victims of war, land mines and poverty, a children's hospital was built in Sudan. The hospital situated in the strategically important city of Port Sudan is one of the few locations where free medical treatment for children is available. In view of the extreme conditions prevailing on site – in particular as regards the hot desert climate and the country's political instability – what was called for was simplicity in design. The architects combined old and new technologies and developed a system that takes cooling, waste air treatment, recycling, redistribution of local materials, landscape design and energy savings into account. In order to clean the hospital's waste water, a public garden was set out. This garden – the only public garden in the neighbourhood – is an important element in the patients' recovery.

What benefits do I get from Zumtobel Limbic® Lighting?

Light is an effective marketing tool. It has the ability to address target groups and differentiate brands. The Limbic® Lighting study provides for the first time solid evicence for developing a target group-specific lighting solution.
    More informationLess information
By changing intensity, contrast, colour, colour temperature, direction and uniformity, the light responds to current trends and emotional needs. A perfect lighting solution stimulates the target group. Prolonged time spent in the shop will increase sales prospects. Once a target group-specific concept has been successfully implemented, it can be multiplied for local or global brand rollout on the basis of design guidelines.

“Never before has anybody realised that light is the decisive marketing factor, which I perceive as being of huge potential,” says Dr. Hans-Georg Häusel of Gruppe Nymphenburg. Jointly with Nicole Schweitzer, he has recorded six videos providing information about the Limbic® Lighting study conducted by Zumtobel in collaboration with Gruppe Nymphenburg.

The findings of this study will help to develop lighting concepts for retail, so that the potential mentioned by Häusel can be used for presenting goods to optimum effect and increasing the customers' sense of well-being, thus making them stay in the shop longer.

Olafur Eliasson uses CRAFT by Zumtobel in his new exhibition

In his first solo exhibition, Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson dissolves the boundary between nature and man-made art.
    More informationLess information
In his "Riverbed" exhibition, Eliasson forces the power of nature into built environment, turning architecture – in the form of the Louisiana Museum in Denmark – into an arena of the forces of nature: in a huge rock installation, a riverbed runs through the south wing of the museum located at the Öresund.

Thus, Eliasson overrides the definition of art, nature, indoors and outdoors, taking the elements of water, soil and rock to the inside. This makes people loose the safety provided by built environment. Moreover, the boundaries between day and night are dissolved by "Riverbed", as there is always daytime.

In this way, the artificial presentation of nature is not subject to the changes of time. For this play with illusion, Olafur Eliasson has used a lighting solution by Zumtobel.

The » CRAFT high-bay LED luminaire, concealed behind a fixed screen, has been installed like a grid above the phenomenal nature setting. Without creating any shadows, diffuse bright light similar to daylight does away with the temporal dimension of day and night.

» The "Riverbed" exhibition will be on display until 4 January 2015 at the Louisiana Museum.
